Still holding out for a late-season humpback whale encounter, but they're for sure heading to their summer feeding grounds up north. Capturing a sharp underwater shot has been tough - this one photo is all I got this season. The whale was pectoral slaps when we spotted it. We were able to approach but stopped the appropriate distance. We were watching it slap the surface for a few moments before it swam toward the boat and dove upside down 🙃🐋 I dipped my camera in the water from the swim step to get the first photo.

Earlier this week, I had an epic encounter with a Unicorn Filefish during a night dive. I was clueless about what it was underwater, but after some research above water, I easily identified it and found out it's a rare sighting in Hawaii.

I haven't posted a Nudi photo for sea slug Sunday recently, and since yesterday was Valentine's Day, I figured the Pustulose Phyllidia was the most appropriate Nudibranch species.

The Lone Tree
Ever since I started taking photos, I always loved the image of a lone tree in a field. It took me way too long to take this picture, but I'm going to start a series of this same view on the island throughout the year

It's disheartening when debris flows into Koloa Landing and Hanaka’ape Bay gets littered with trash and waste. But when I got an unexpected three-day break, I decided to take action with a clean-up dive. I didn't manage to pick everything up - it was just a drop in the ocean, really. Among the bits I collected were some small plastic pieces, fishing line, cans, golf balls, and surprisingly, a toy car, which was the strangest item of my haul.

I created two calendars for 2026, and I’m figuring out who’s interested. First is my usual best-of-the-year calendar, which includes both underwater and Nāpali Coast photos. The second calendar is a special edition featuring only frogfish, since I captured enough images this year. If you’re interested in either or both, see below, and I’ll message you if I can mail them as well.

The Titian Scorpionfish is one of the largest Scorpionfish in the world. They can grow up to twenty inches long; in comparison, the more commonly seen Devil Scorpionfish grows up to twelve inches. On top of its triumphant size, the Titian is also endemic to the Hawaiian Islands!
I got this shot on a night dive, so I was able to isolate it more. Despite their size, they are masters of blending in.

wide angle, wet lens Taken with an .cameras TG7 in a PT-059 housing. I used a KRL 11 wide-angle wetlens, a LTD 12000 LED for a key light, and a Hydra 2500 LED for some filler light. Diving with
