I’ll be posting many photos of my recent trip to Europe. 🇪🇺 I cannot even come close to describing the feeling of standing before nearly 2,000 years of history. 🏛️🇮🇹
This is the iconic Colosseum (also called the Flavian Amphitheatre) in Rome.
A few details that stand out:
* 🏛️ Built between A.D. 72 and 80, it is nearly 2,000 years old.
* 👥 It could hold 50,000–80,000 spectators, making it the largest amphitheater of the Roman Empire.
* ⚔️ It hosted gladiator contests, animal hunts, public spectacles, and dramatic performances.
* 🧱 Originally, much of the exterior was covered with smooth white travertine stone, and parts of the upper structure were decorated with bronze. Earthquakes and centuries of stone reuse gave it the weathered appearance we see today.
* 🎬 It’s one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks and has appeared in countless films and documentaries.
Standing in front of the Colosseum is one of those moments that makes you realize you’re face-to-face with history that has survived empires, wars, and nearly twenty centuries. 📯
