Stepping Through
White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
Cades Cove - Great Smoky Mountains National Park (January 2, 2026)

I have been slacking on posting again! But with a trip to Florida this week, I did some editing while riding. I’ve wanted to share this one for a while, as it may be my new favorite buck image I have. I love when the grass is in that fall colors, and the deer just stand out! Plus, that catch light in the eye doesn’t hurt either! This guy was in the field, and a lot of people pulled up. He kind of took off the other direction toward the woods. Most people drove off, but I knew he was trailing a doe, so I stayed put. Sure enough, he soon came back out. He ran across the field until he got to the edge. There, he stopped and slowly walked out of the tall grass before continuing on his way.

Sunrises in the Smokies simply can’t be beat! For this to be my first picture of 2026, it’s a special one. I always love winter sunrises in this location, and I was bummed when I was looking at weather the night before. Everything pointed to it being a horrible idea for sunrise. Well, once I met up with Cindy, the sky was already getting color. We rushed, along with both my kids in tow, to Foothills Parkway. It was a good thing, because it didn’t last long! The color was gone 15 minutes before actual sunrise. And it never returned. It’s always good when you can watch a Smokies sunrise!

It was a much-needed day in the Cove yesterday! I feel like I haven’t been able to get out much lately, and although yesterday had its stressful moments (see a nearly flat tire in the Cove), it was a great escape! We saw so much, but many times, it was hard to capture pictures. That’s fine. I enjoy spending time outside! But the ending to the day was absolutely incredible! We came up on these two bucks, and both were in shaded areas. This big guy ran the smaller one off, and his does took off into the field. That put him in some incredible light with the amazing wispy grass! The pose of him standing in the hill here just added to it! I want to make it a priority to focus more on my photography as we enter 2026! I miss those moments in nature, and I’m hoping I have more of those as we enter the new year.

Honored and humbled again this year, as I entered the Anderson County Fair. I honestly have photographed very much over the past year and a half, but I had enough things to submit some entries. I was honored to see that I’d managed to place again this year.

Out of seven images, I walked away with four first-place awards and a third-place award. It was awesome to see all the photos in the fair this year, and I was glad to be a small part of it. I think anyone that shoots photography should strive to enter contests, whether that be with the fair or with photography groups. It pushes you to be better, learn more, and see how to improve through other people’s photos. I remember entering the Anderson County Fair about 15 years ago (that’s honestly hard to comprehend) and I walked away without a single award. I was crushed at the time, but it pushed me to learn. To fix mistakes I didn’t even see in my own work. I encourage everyone to enter when you get an opportunity!

It’s amazing how you can go by something so many times over the span of a few days and not notice it. But once the light hits it just right, it’s like it stands out like a candle in the night. That was this scene. I’ve been lucky enough to go to the Cove four times over a week’s span, and I never even noticed this scene until this past Sunday. As we dove down Hyatt, I even drove past this a bit. Then, something caught my eye, and I put it in reverse. Once I walked out into the field, I had to just stand there a look for a bit. Sometimes, I forget to do that. In such rush to click the shutter, I don’t stop to take it all in myself. A sea of purple leading to greens and golds at the foot of the Smokies - it was amazing! I always say you never know what you might see in the Cove, and that goes for if you’ve been by it 25 times. Something will always catch your eye differently.

Happy Independence Day to all! I’m always excited to get a photo of the bird that represents our freedom! Eagles, as with most birds of prey, have always been a fascination of mine! On my first trip to Alaska, I was disappointed I didn’t get to see any, but on my second trip, I got more than a few. This guy sat on the side of the road over some roadkill, watching for intruders to its meal. It was so excited that I just stood there and watched for a while. It’s amazing to see more and more of these birds in East Tennessee! Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

There’s just something so calming about a foggy morning in the Smokies and watching the world wake up. On Friday, the fog was just too thick. You couldn’t see through it hardly, but on Sunday, it was just right. When we found this bachelor group of bucks all showing off their velvet antlers. After watching them feeding in the field for a while, I noticed they began to move toward the fence. Anyone that knows me knows that jumpers are my favorite! With the fences going away in spots, I was afraid I wouldn’t get to see many more. Fortunately, a couple gave me an opportunity. I missed the biggest guy, but this one, I got. This is my first buck in velvet jumper that I have ever captured!

I finally made it back out to the Smokies, and to say I needed it was an understatement. I enjoyed it so much, I went back again two days later with the family! Elliott loves animals, and he’s getting to where he is so inquisitive about everything. After visiting the zoo recently, he became infatuated by snakes. (I think he comes by it honest. Lol) So, I knew when I saw these snakes had returned, he would want to see them. Rattlesnakes, or any snake for that matter, has been a fascination for me, too. Sitting there watching their behavior was so much fun. We saw at least five, and the yellow one was absolutely gorgeous! I can’t wait to get back out there!

Taken with a 600mm lens from a safe distance.

I’m honestly really shocked tonight. I dropped photos off last-minute this morning at the Anderson County Fair. I had one photo that didn’t fit into a category, so I only entered six. When Elizabeth got home, I asked if she wanted to run to the fair and see what was going on.

Never would I have guessed that I’d have six first-place photos, including Best of Show! I haven’t been able to shoot as much lately as I’d like, and I honestly feel like, sometimes, my passion has dwindled with everything life throws at you. It’s an honor to be recognized, and I’m hoping I can get back behind a camera soon! I can say I have missed it!

Pool days often become spider days at some point. The fence in our backyard, to my surprise, has become a great place to find jumpers lurking looking for meals. If you see me out there slowly examining my fence, just mind ya business. Lol Tan Jumping Spiders, like this male, are often found lurking behind the poles or just sunning on the wood. This guy quickly jumped on a leaf I had, and then he got a little shy. He hid behind the curl, I assume looking at his reflection in my lens. The males of this species are often the hardest for me to find. And for those that done know, male spiders typically have more coloration than females. The females of this species are a dappled tan and grey to help them blend in more. The males have that bright tan stripe under the eyes, which I assume helps attract mates.
