Top Ten Sync & Songwriting Secrets

Hey Everybody, I’m Blue 🌀

Working in the sync licensing field, I’ve learned a few things that have surprised me 🤯 Let me know what you think!

1. The Minor Key Revolution: 😿

67% of songs that are “HITS“
are in a MINOR KEY.

(According to Billboard Top 40) 🎧

2. If your song has lyrics:

The word “YOU” needs to hit fast-within 18 seconds (brings the listener in, makes it personal)👋

3. Tempo Targets:

Ballads: 67-70 BPM😞
Upbeat: 120+ BPM 😤

These are the sweet spots 🍭

4: Dead Zone: 109-118BPM

Almost nonexistent in the past decade with hit music 🌀

5: The Fourth Form: 🎼
Verse-Prechorus-Chorus-Bridge

The traditional verse chorus bridge model has evolved for the streaming economy. 💸

This structure front loads the hook to grab listeners immediately🔥

6. Chord Structures That Sell: 💰

Uplifting: I-V-vi-IV
(Found in 40+ Billboard #1 Hits)

Ballad: vi-IV-I-V
(Go-To for melancholy into hopeful)

7. The 30-Second Rule: ⏳
Because streaming revenue triggers at 30 seconds, modern songs "front-load" the hook (see 5)
