It’s been a minute since I’ve shared a Sunday —life has been tap dancing around my schedule, as it tends to do. But today, the spotlight drifts over to Jon, a man who somehow manages to balance seriousness and joy like a magician spinning plates.

For someone with a profession built on vigilance, Jon carries kindness the way some folks carry lucky charms—always close, always shining. When he’s working his Smoketown Security Services business, he transforms: focused eyes, steady stance, intensity humming around him like a force field. But the moment the workday loosens its grip, that trademark smile pops back out, bright enough to make you forget he was ever serious at all.

Jon knows how to let loose, laugh until the smoke curls sideways, and enjoy a cigar with the fellas as if the world itself were taking a breather. He’s a family man, a globe trotter, and one of those rare friends whose loyalty feels stitched into the fabric of every moment you share. Step into his inner circle and you’ll find him there—warm, steady, and ready to turn even an ordinary day into something quietly magical.

This week’s portrait is for him. A reminder that some people carry both strength and softness like twin lanterns, lighting the way for everyone lucky enough to walk beside them.

The sun slips through the window in a spectacular wash of color, softened by just enough haze to dim the fierce glow of that great yellow star we depend on for life. At Big Bend National Park, every sunrise and sunset feels like another gallery opening in the sky — fleeting masterpieces painted in real time, never to appear the same way twice. In the end, Mother Nature is the true artist. We’re simply the fortunate ones invited to witness her work.

As America marks its 250th year, our National Parks — defining pieces of America the Beautiful — must remain protected. To do my part, I’m pledging 10% of all sales from my National Parks collection to the National Parks Conservation Association. These landscapes deserve our vigilance, our stewardship, and our love. To be honest, I’m still baffled that this rock formation hasn’t toppled into legend. Balanced Rock perches on its neighboring boulders, its footprint so delicate it feels like a breath could unsettle it. After roughly 38 million years of sculpting by wind, water, and time itself, it stands there anyway — a geological dare, a marvel that seems to wink at gravity.

Getting there feels like its own adventure. The “road” to the trailhead is more of a suggestion, braided with washes that not so politely insist on a high‑clearance vehicle. But once you’re on the trail, the world shifts. The landscape unfurls like an alien dreamscape — soft, strange, and otherworldly — and you can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped off Earth for a while. The final bit of bouldering might give some folks pause, but the payoff is pure magic. And no, I’m absolutely not counting the extra half mile I had to backtrack to retrieve my second camera. Yup, even professionals forget the basics on occasion.

Now the only question lingering in my mind: black and white, or color — which version of reality tells the better story?

The sun never forgets us. Each day it rises to brighten our world, asking only that we pause long enough to feel its warmth and remember the life it gives. At Big Bend National Park, the soft haze in the atmosphere turns sunrise into a spectacle of pastels — the kind of colors once lifted from the palettes of master painters. Clouds drift like gentle brushstrokes across the sky, reaching toward the sun without hesitation, as if eager to be part of its unfolding canvas.

I’ve had time to sit with my days in Big Bend National Park, letting the memories settle like dust in desert light. The week keeps unfolding in my mind — an unforgettable stretch of time that still invites quiet reflection. The vastness of the place feels almost beyond human scale, a horizon so wide it humbles you, while the intimate details of the desert flora pull you inward. Even a single Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) at sunrise becomes a moment of wonder, its whip like spiny stems reaching toward the newborn sun as if eager to greet the day.

I wasn’t prepared for the spectacle of sunrise and sunset in Big Bend. The perpetual haze along the horizon softens the sun just enough to witness its full brilliance with the naked eye. Colors of pink, purple, orange, and red lift themselves from a pastel palette and sweep across the sky. Each morning and evening feels like a fresh canvas — a new Picasso, Degas, or Renoir painted in real time, dissolving as quickly as it appears.

Yet amid all this beauty, the uncertainty remains. Border construction in Big Bend National Park may be paused until mid September, but its future is unclear. And the pattern is unmistakable: with key protections weakened, National Parks across the country face mounting threats from mining, logging, drilling, and development. Fragile habitats, wildlife, and irreplaceable heritage sites are increasingly exposed. Please confirm details with a trusted source.

Ben... hmm. There's so much I could say, I hardly know where to start.

He is without a doubt one of the most generous people I know. He's always willing to lend a hand, help a friend, organize an event, or cook for dozens of people. The list is endless. What makes it even more remarkable is that he does these things without ever expecting anything in return.

If you're lucky enough to call Ben a friend, you've got a ride-or-die for life. This man has a huge heart and a personality to match.

Ben recently celebrated a birthday, and T-shirts were made featuring this photo. It's definitely the first photo I've taken that has ended up on a shirt honoring someone who is, quite simply, unforgettable. You're truly one of a kind, Ben.

I never would have found this friendship without the community that Traveling Bros Ci**rs has built. Maybe "misfits" isn't the right word, but it's the closest I can come to describing such a diverse group of people. Despite all their differences, they can grab a stick, crack open a drink, and spend hours sharing conversations, stories, and laughter at TBC.

And somehow, that's where friendships like this are born.

Driving through Big Bend feels like moving through a dream of the earth—where distance unravels, horizons drift, and the land keeps unfolding long after you think it should stop. Even a 24 panel panoramic can only whisper at the scale of it, a fragile attempt to hold a landscape that refuses to be held.

The border construction at Big Bend National Park is paused until mid September, but its future remains uncertain. What is clear is the broader pattern: with key protections weakened, National Parks nationwide face growing threats from mining, logging, drilling, and development. Fragile habitats, wildlife, and heritage sites are increasingly exposed.

If you walked into Traveling Bros Ci**rs and simply said “Kevin,” every head would lift in recognition. He’s not just a familiar face — he’s a fixture, a chapter in the lounge’s living history. A former keeper of the humidor and the undisputed karaoke king, Kevin carries himself with the easy confidence of someone who’s seen a lot, learned a lot, and somehow remembers all of it.

He’s a walking library of curiosities — ci**rs, history, music, sports — the kind of man who can turn any conversation into a masterclass or a comedy sketch, depending on the moment. To call him a trivia partner’s dream is an understatement; he’s the secret weapon you bring when you actually want to win.

Wherever Kevin settles, laughter follows. Smiles gather. The room brightens. His humor is quick, his kindness steady, and together they make him one of those rare people who leave the world a little lighter than they found it.

Kevin isn’t just known at Traveling Bros Ci**rs — he’s felt.

I was there the very first day Eric wandered into Traveling Bros Ci**rs, wearing that wide‑eyed, what magical realm have I just discovered, expression. To be fair, that might simply be his default setting—Eric seems to move through life with a smile ready to bloom and a story waiting to be told.

He settled into the shop quickly, loving it with the same enthusiasm he has for owls—fitting, since he’s now one of the proud keepers of the humidor. There’s a gentle joy about him, the kind that greets you at the door before he even speaks.

Spend a moment with Eric and whatever weight you carried in with you starts to fade. His smile has a way of turning problems into distant echoes, leaving you lighter, warmer, and grateful you stopped by.
