Let’s revisit this shall we…
This photoshoot, once again, is more than just a picture. It is inspired by America’s history and what was once shrouded. We hear of many stories about the Old West and how it was forged, but the history of a black man saddling up his horse and riding out into the unknown lands was somehow forgotten and not truly recognized. Only a couple photos and stories exist of these legends, but it only touches the surface of what it was truly like to live in those times. Paintings, today, bring a sense of color and diversity to the many men of the west; they display a conceptual idea of a black cowboy riding into the open area as the skies are doused a bright blue, while the sun awakens the land.
During this time of photographing and editing these photos, we wanted them to resemble the paintings in the way of how the colors are used with vibrancy and saturation— the poses and angles are dramatic and bold, echoing the previous lives who roamed the West. We also wanted to incorporate black and white photos to parallel with the ones that were taken in the past. In other words, we wanted to revive an uncommon nostalgia about the Western Times.
One of the many reasons I love working with .maji is how he always finds a way to make limitations become strengths. It is never a thing of “can we do it?” It is, “when will we do it?” I always walk away learning something new from this guy; Timothy, thank you for your knowledge and the passion you have to share with others. You keep me open-minded which invites new perspectives that need to be recognized. Everything in these photos plays an important part in the narrative that is unraveling before our eyes; I’m just incredibly thankful I had the opportunity to be apart of it.
Check out .maji post to learn more about the inspiration for these photos, for he was the one who had the passion and vision for them.
