How close can brown bears get in Katmai National Park? It depends. We do not approach closer than 50 yards as per regulations with the park, but bears don’t really know the park rules and can’t read signs. Sometimes they are curious or totally forget that we are there, ending up a little closer! As you can see in this video, this adolescent male bear was grazing and started moving his grazing spot a little closer to us. He’s completely relaxed and focused on his task of eating.

In Alaska, bears congregate on the same rivers to fish. The best fishing spots in prime locations on River are covered by the most dominant and largest of bears. Mothers and cubs, adolescence, and lesser dominant bears fill in other spots in different areas. So when a bear enters the river and wants a prime fishing spot, they must enter with incredible confidence and displays of dominance. By walking in boldly, keeping their head up, ears perked, and stalking up river, less dominant bears will submit and yield space.

Follow me to see what happens when two dominant bears get in the same river…

Taken on BEAR expeditions, come with me to see bears this year

Finally got to photograph one of the animals I’ve tried so hard to see in Jackson! It’s taken me 10 years as a wildlife photographer to get close to this little adorable family in my grandparents’ backyard

🔊As the tide comes in on the coasts Svalbard, you can hear the ice crushing together, crackling, even sometimes a squeaking sound from floes under pressure.
