From photographer Bryan Hansel - The other day I saw on Facebook that a Duluth photographer was mad that people called Lake Superior an "inland sea."
All I could think was maybe he ought to argue with Rev. George Grant, who in 1872 wrote, "Those who have never seen Superior get an inadequate, even inaccurate idea, by hearing it spoken of as a 'lake,' and to those who have sailed over its vast extent the word sounds positively ludicrous. Though its waters are fresh and crystal, Superior is a sea. It breeds storms, and rain and fogs, like the sea. It is cold in mid-summer as the Atlantic. It is wild, masterful, and dreaded as the Black Sea."
I call this photo of the inland sea called Lake Superior "Faces of the Dead."

I took this image years ago, but I can still remember the day vividly. The cottonwoods in Jackson Hole were glowing gold, and as the sun began to dip behind the Tetons, a great gray owl appeared—its eyes mirroring the warm light of autumn.

There was a stillness in the air, that quiet moment before dusk when the valley holds its breath. The great gray, North America’s tallest owl, is more feather than weight—barely two pounds—yet moves with an elegance and power that never fails to amaze me. Moments after I took this photo, it slipped silently from its perch, disappearing into the trees like a whisper.

NEW: "Shades of Autumn"
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Each autumn, the Great Smoky Mountains transform into a symphony of color—a fleeting yet unforgettable performance by nature. My new image, Shades of Autumn, captures this moment of overlap when the maples, beech, and oaks all join in one magnificent crescendo.

There’s a quiet power in watching the seasons change. The colors may come and go in an instant, but the memory lingers.

In my latest Behind the Lens story, I share how patience and timing came together on a simple stroll to create this image—and why moments like these remind us to slow down and truly see.

"Firefall"
This photo is of the spectacular "lava fire hose" that was active in Hawaii in 2017. I made this photo from a boat at night while the lava flowed into the ocean over a cliff. I was lucky to get this shot, as the lava flow ended several days later.
