The Farmette is looking for volunteers! See post for details. ๐Ÿซ

This adorable little guy is Bernie. He is 33 years old and going strong. Donkeys can live a LONG time so plan accordingly! Bernie and his two even older friends, donkey Shelby and mini horse Jay who are both 35 (!), all belonged to the same owner for almost 30 years. There was a fourth little donkey named Bambi who passed away since then. The owner had to move into a retirement home and was going to euthanize all four animals because she didn't want to risk their ending up in the wrong hands. We heard about the situation and reached out to her because we had a wonderful foster who was willing to take them in. She eventually adopted them. Because of some health issues, she recently had to surrender them back to us which, of course, was heartbreaking. And it's hard for donkeys, especially older ones, to adjust to change but this little group has thankfully made a very good transition. They require extra care as do most seniors, human and animal, but they are so worth the extra time and energy involved.

The Farmette has no paid staff and we all do this work as a team out of our love for the animals and a commitment to rescue. Have you been considering joining us as a volunteer? Please email us with your interest and availability. Winter is a particularly challenging time of year for animal care and we need more help. We have other FT jobs and are struggling a bit these days to get everything done.

We have both AM and PM shifts on various weekdays and weekends. A barn cleaning shift takes about 90 minutes depending on weather, etc. No previous experience is needed though volunteers do need to be capable of physical work and the only skill required is the ability to push (or learn to push!) a wheelbarrow. We'll teach you the rest.

We require volunteers to commit to at least one shift weekly. It's fun to do it with a friend or family member. Children 16 and over are also welcome but must be accompanied by a parent at all times and must be willing to share equally in the work.

If you're interested in working with us (Pipersville, PA), please PM or email us at [email protected] There is nothing like sharing a mission and working together. And the donkey company is fabulous! Thank you!
