Letâs talk newborn sessions with toddlers for a secondâbecause they can either be AAAHHHMAZING⊠or full-on meltdown central đ
There are a few things I intentionally do to help siblings feel happy, included, and honestlyâŠexcited to be there. And my track record is pretty solid (now donât hold me to that when itâs time for photos with my own toddlers lol).
Here are a few of my go-to tricks:
1 - I chat them up before we even start.
I make it about them right away. New baby just arrived and suddenly all the attention has shiftedâso Iâm intentional about connecting with the toddler first, asking questions, noticing them, and making them feel seen.
2 - I give them an important âjobâ.
Instead of directing at them, I pull them into it. Iâll say things like, âDo you think Daddy is strong enough to make you an airplane?â or have them help me âfixâ something. It turns everything into a game and gives them a sense of control.
3 - I lean into what they love.
If theyâre into Spider-Man, weâre flipping upside down. If theyâre in a princess phase, weâre twirling that dress. Whatever lights them upâwe go there. Because when theyâre having fun, thatâs when the magic happens.
Honestly, so much of this has come from raising my own two wild, energetic toddlers. I get it. Meltdowns can still happen, and sometimes theyâre completely out of our controlâbut when we keep things playful and low-pressure, most kids donât even realize weâre taking photos.
In this session, we started outside on the porch playing a few of these âgames,â and when we headed inside, the little boy looked at me and said, âThose games were so funâare you ready to start taking my pictures?â
Meanwhile⊠we had already gotten some of the best images of the entire session.  And thatâs always the goal đ€
