Groton, CT | May 31, 2026 4:54 AM

The full moon totally snuck up on me! The full moon rise on the 30th was cloudy on the horizon near me but I was at Nubble anyway to catch some good sunset color but wasn’t going to see the moon. I got home around 9PM to buckle down and get a baseball league photo day finished. Around midnight I realized I should check the weather for the moon set in the morning. It was going to be clear so then I had to search for a good location. Last month at New London Ledge Light I couldn’t get as far as I needed to align the moon exactly where I wanted it with the lighthouse but looking at it this month, the spot I was in last month was going to be perfect! I got on the road around 1:30 and after a gas/road snack pitstop I made it to Groton at 4:25AM.

Daylight was starting and I got out to the end of the jetty just in time to catch a sequence of the moon going down. I set my interval timer for a shot every 12 seconds. As the moon got closer to the middle of the lighthouse I was really regretting that long of an interval. The moon moves surprisingly quickly when you don’t want it to. I was so relieved when the shutter went off at this exact moment where I’m not sure it could have been more perfectly centered.

Once the moon had set and it was fully light out I saw another photographer across the water from me so I went over and chatted with him for a bit.

After stopping for coffee, air for my tire, a bathroom, and more gas I got home around 8:30AM and didn’t have to stop to sleep! I managed to get the league done today (and a couple of naps) and hope to see some sales roll in.

Fun fact: for some reason I zoomed way in on this picture and found what looked like an eagle on the top left of the lighthouse. I’ve been duped by fake eagles before (as so many are) so I was skeptical. I looked back at my image from last month to see if it was there. It was not! AND I saw on last month’s image a seagull at the very tippy top of the lighthouse.

West Newfield, ME | May 4, 2026 11:04 PM

Yesterday morning I did some class preschool photos about 20 minutes away from my house. I had to be back this morning to do the rest of the classes so I asked if I could leave my equipment there including my camera. I really thought about it…basically a full moon so no chance or aurora or milky way, no storms…I definitely didn’t need my camera. I spent the rest of the day at my studio getting some work done then at 3:30 my phone started alerting me of really good aurora numbers and double checking the moon rise, there would be a 2-3 hour window to see some good lights. It was after 4:00 by the time I had done all the research and realized I NEEDED my camera. I frantically called the church that the preschool is in hoping someone answered the phone. It took a while and just as I was giving up hope someone answered! He said, “I was literally walking out the door and almost didn’t come back to answer the phone.” I asked if he could possibly stay for 20 minutes while I drove over and he so very kindly said ok. I was so grateful!

Then I needed to pick a location. I had 2 compositions in mind. My cloud apps sometimes let me down so I asked my trusty weather guy what he thought. He said Maine for sure…the clouds were going to push off. Driving north for 1.5 hours the clouds were still fully visible and didn’t see any clearing at all. Naturally, the clouds decided to stick around so I had to pivot very quickly and find ANY clear north unobstructed view to my west. Time was ticking away and I got super lucky with the location. Aside from it STILL being cloudy I could still see some stars and the aurora did show through though it wasn’t a massive storm.

As I put my camera down on the side of the road to take a test shot, the long exposure revealed an amazing piece of farm equipment silhouetted in the sky. I was so happy! I got my composition how I wanted, set the camera’s timer and let it go for 2 hours.

After the moon came up I grabbed my camera and scrolled through to see what I got. The deer walking around on the ridge was icing on the cake.

Arriving home at 2:30 I crashed hard. 😴

Groton, CT | May 3, 2026 6:02 AM

I got home from a Derby party Saturday night around 11:30. I had no plans on photographing the full moon setting because I thought it was cloudy. After taking a peek at the radar it looked like if I just got more west I would be clear for the moon to set around 6:00AM. I set my sights on New London Ledge Light in Groton, CT. 2.5 hours later I was at Avery Point scoping out the scene. I had plenty of time before the moon went down and to be honest I couldn’t even see it because it was totally cloudy so I took a nap. My alarm went off at 5:00 and I was so happy to see the moon clearly making its way to the horizon. As it got lighter I could see that there was a bank of clouds at the horizon and I was so annoyed, but it turns out that by the time the moon got to the bank of clouds, It was too light out to really even see it. I wish I could have caught the moon a little lower in the middle of the lighthouse but I was already out as far as I could get without being in a boat.

It took me a while to get home due to a few nap stops.

Marblehead, MA | May 1, 2026 8:12 PM

I was happy to see clear skies for last nights’ full moon rise.  The alignment looked great at Marblehead Light so I made my way there.  I had the spot I needed to be in specifically mapped out.  When I got there I opened up my app to verify and it was showing the moon in a completely different place.  I checked another app and it was in a third place.  UGH Where do I go?  I kept swirling my phone to calibrate it and finally it showed it where I thought it was supposed to be initially.  I ran up to where I needed to be and guess what I found?  A gaggle of photographers with long lenses and tripods and the moon already half showing.  I scrambled to get my settings just right.  There are certainly things I would have done differently but I’m relatively happy with this.

I finally remembered to get myself in an aurora photo! Sling and all LOL (To be fair most of this is light pollution but you can see some pink pillars to the right of the bridge)

I let the camera roll during this time while I warmed up in my car. The goal was to catch aurora if it decided to show up and if it didn’t, I would still have great footage for a cool star trail as a consolation prize.

As I’m setting up my shot I put the shutter on a 2 second delay to make sure everything is perfectly in focus otherwise I could shake the camera. Before I set my interval timer to go I turn the 2 second delay off. After all this time I got back to the camera to realize I had left it on. I was so worried that there would be gaps in my frames but other than possibly missing some big meteors it doesn’t seem to have made a difference.

I did have to change my battery in the middle of this which moved the camera a touch so I did my best to match it all up. Not perfect but not sure many would notice.

ALSO this image was made in mere minutes thanks again to Startrails Stacker. You NEED to get this app if you are still doing Startrails in photoshop!
