I’ve been struggling a little lately, and I think it’s time I say something. I truly have contemplated making this post for a while now (and still kind of am) but I do believe in vulnerability and showing the hard things as well.
I’ve met some truly amazing photographers who have been nothing but kind, welcoming, encouraging, and supportive. I’m so grateful for those relationships and for the women who genuinely cheer each other on. 🤍
But lately, I’ve also noticed some things that have left me questioning myself and the work I’ve put so much time into.
There is so much that goes into what I do behind the scenes. I spend countless hours scouting locations, studying poses, planning sessions, finding ways to make each session feel like an experience rather than just another photo session, and working hard to create a style that feels like ME.
I understand we live in a small town. Our locations are limited, and of course there will naturally be similarities between photographers. That’s not what bothers me.
It’s the constant comparisons. Seeing locations, ideas, poses, and elements of my style show up so closely that it makes me question whether the things I’ve worked so hard to create even feel like mine anymore.
And honestly, it’s discouraging.
There is room for all of us. We can be inspired by each other without copying each other. We can admire someone’s work without trying to recreate it. We can support other women without treating them like competition.
Running a small business in a small town is hard enough as it is. I truly believe there is enough room for all of us to grow, succeed, and have our own place in this community.
So, let’s normalize supporting other women. 🤍
Let’s celebrate each other. Let’s encourage each other. Let’s be inspired by one another while still creating something that is uniquely our own.
Because there is so much more beauty in community than there is in competition.
