Fitness Patron Spotlight, Sara George!

Why do you love working out at Kettering Recreation Complex?

"The people are friendly, the environment is chill and it has everything I need. Plus, the location is great for me!"

What is your favorite exercise?

"Run! My life is very much centered around running. You won’t see me running much at the gym, though—I prefer being outside, even on the coldest of days. At the gym, I love feeling strong. I don’t have one particular favorite exercise, but I do a lot of free weights."

What are your goals for 2026?

"I’ve seen HUGE progress in my running over the past few years! Some highlights include taking 2nd female with a PR at the Glass City Marathon, placing 39th female out of 27,000 at the NYC Marathon, and most recently, finishing 8th female in a strong elite field at the Indy Mini Half Marathon. For 2026, the goal is simple: keep setting PRs and getting faster—despite the fact that I’m—gasp—aging!"

What tips would you give to a new member of our Kettering Fitness community?

- Prioritize Consistency: Enjoyment and consistency are key!
- Find movement you enjoy and make it part of your routine. Once it becomes a habit, it feels weird not to do it!
- Know Your Motivation: Find your "why" and use it to stay driven.
- Train Your Brain: Go to the gym on the days Anthony does trivia so you can work out your brain, too!

Thank you, Sara, for being a wonderful part of our fitness family!

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL!

The Kettering Parks Pollinator BioBlitz starts today and runs through Sept. 30!

Not every pollinator is common—and that's part of what makes a Bioblitz exciting. Ohio is home to many native pollinators that can be difficult to find or identify, including specialized native bees and several bumble bee species that have experienced declines.

One species that conservationists are especially interested in is the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee (Bombus affinis). This once-common bumble bee has disappeared from much of its former range and is now federally endangered.

That doesn't mean you shouldn’t expect to find one—but it DOES mean that every bumble bee observation can be valuable.

- Large bumble bee? Photograph it!
- Tiny bee? Photograph it!
- Looks like a bee but you're not sure? Photograph it!
- Strange butterfly you've never seen before? Photograph it!

Don't know what it is? That's what the iNaturalist community is for! Scan the QR code at any Kettering park kiosk or find our project on iNaturalist and join in the fun at playkettering.org/bioblitz.

During our September Pollinator Bioblitz, your "I have no idea what this is!" observation might turn out to be something really interesting, rare and all observations are important.

Observe, photograph and submit at: playkettering.org/bioblitz

THE POLLINATOR CHALLENGE!

Think you've got what it takes to become a Pollinator Bioblitz expert?

Here's your September challenge:

*Find a bee
*Find a butterfly
*Find a moth
*Find a flower fly
*Find a beetle visiting a flower
*Find a wasp visiting a flower
*Find a hummingbird
*Find a pollinator you can't identify!

- Photograph each one.
- Record where you found it.
- Upload your observations to our iNaturalist project at playkettering.org/bioblitz.

Bonus challenge: Find five different pollinators visiting the SAME plant species! You don't need fancy equipment. A smartphone is enough. And remember—there are no "bad" observations. Anything that appears to be a pollinator is important to submit.

How many different pollinators can YOU document this September? Let's find out together.

Questions? Contact us at 937-296-2477.

This year, 36 artists submitted 100 pieces from which the juror, Sarah Hahn, chose 27 artworks for the exhibition. The juror also selected the winners of awards totaling $1,100. Don’t miss your chance to see this year’s exhibition!
