This selective color black and white shot of the Chicago Theater won first place in the recent Serge Ramelli competition. Gloomy day, but the theater sign just called to me. I rarely use selective color since it usually seems hokey, but I (and Serge) thought this was a great example. I walked up to the El (elevated train) station just down the block and hung out the opening.

Hello, friends! I got back from Egypt and Jordan recently (yes, in the middle of tax season) and have been working on my many, many images from the wealth of locations.
The first image was awarded Second place in the competition of photographs at the workshop (out of about 50 entries) and third in the Serge Ramelli Institute competition (out of roughly 200 images).
We were all crammed into a small water taxi on the Nile River at Luxor trying the get shots of the many Feluccas at sunset. Thankfully, we all worked together to let everyone get the shots they wanted.
The second image was awarded honorable mention at both competitions. This was taken at the Temple of Edfu in the morning. I was walking into the Temple to the first room with many wonderful columns when I noticed the shadow of the giant Falcon statue which stands just outside the entrance to the Temple. I converted the image to black and white to show off the amazing beauty of the columns with the added drama of the Falcon shadow.
More images to come once I am happy with the colors and lighting. It is tough sometimes to get dramatic shots in a brown desert filled with brown buildings, but wait until I finish the shots of the Sphinx and Pyramids at sunset.

Recently, my group in the Thriving Artists had a competition on split tone B&W images. This one won first! Split toning involves adding color (usually blue) to the shadows and color (usually yellow) to the highlights. This technique mimics cyanotype prints from the 1800s. I thought that the image of Venice gondolas had that old look anyway. Quite a lot of fun to work on B&W images to split tone them. I ill be adding many split tone images to my Etsy store as well, probably not until I return from a shoot in the mountains of Colorado.

Chasing Light in Iceland:

When I set out to photograph Iceland, I imagined golden sunsets and postcard skies. Instead, I was met with relentless rain, misty beaches, and endless lens-cleaning rituals. What felt like obstacles at first became the very soul of the images I captured.
Through patience, persistence, and hours of editing, I discovered that the rain had given me something unexpected: moody skies, lush moss glowing green, and waterfalls overflowing with power. These weren’t the perfect shots I planned—they were something more real.
Iceland taught me that sometimes the obstacles are the art. 🌍✨
Here are a few images from that unforgettable journey.
