🌊 Did you know that Pleasure Island wasn't always an island? 🤯

The Snow's Cut Trail at Carolina Beach State Park runs alongside one of the most fascinating—and overlooked—pieces of local history: Snow's Cut itself. Before 1929, the area we now call Pleasure Island was actually a peninsula, connecting Wilmington all the way down to Kure Beach.

⚓ A Cut Through History ⚓

Construction on Snow's Cut began in 1929 and was completed in 1931, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dug a man-made channel connecting the Cape Fear River to Myrtle Grove Sound as part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The project literally separated Carolina Beach from the mainland and created Pleasure Island as we know it today.

The cut takes its name from Major William A. Snow, the U.S. Army engineer who oversaw a portion of the project near Carolina Beach.

🚶 Walk the History 🚶

Today, the Snow's Cut Trail offers an easy 0.75-mile walk along this historic waterway, with picturesque vistas of the Intracoastal Waterway and plenty of opportunities to watch passing boats glide by.

✨ Highlights:

🚶 Easy, family-friendly terrain

🌳 Towering pine-hardwood forest with a peaceful, shaded canopy

🚸 Includes the TRACK Trail, a kid-friendly section with brochures available at the trailhead

🏕️ Accessible from both the picnic area and the campground

💡 Pro tip: Bring bug spray and your sense of wonder. 🦟

🏔️ Looking for one of the best hikes in the NC High Country? Meet the Summit Trail at Elk K**b State Park — a 1.9-mile climb to a 5,520-foot summit just north of Boone.

Built by volunteers over five and a half years (6,000+ hours of trail love!), this well-graded path winds through a northern hardwood forest bursting with wildflowers like Gray's lily, flame azalea, and purple fringed orchid every spring through fall.

About halfway up? A vista that's nearly as jaw-dropping as the top. 🌄

And the summit itself? TWO overlooks:
⛰️ North Summit — Mount Rogers, Pond Mountain, Three Top Mountain, and views deep into Virginia
⛰️ South Summit — Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, Mount Mitchell, plus the slopes of Beech and Sugar Mountain

977 feet of elevation gain, moderate difficulty, and some of the most spectacular high-country scenery in the southern Appalachians.

Lace up your boots — Elk K**b is calling. 🥾

🏖️ Have you visited the NEW Fort Fisher State Historic Site yet? If not, you're seriously missing out! This Kure Beach gem just got a MAJOR upgrade and was even named the 2025 North Carolina Visitor Attraction of the Year! 🏆

⚔️ Fort Fisher has been a significant part of Civil War history for generations. Built to protect the port of Wilmington, it served as one of the last lifelines for the Confederacy before falling to Union forces in January 1865. Today, the experience of visiting Fort Fisher has never been better!

🏛️ Brand New Visitor Center — The site has introduced a remarkable new 20,000-square-foot visitor center, replacing the original building from 1965. This new center offers nearly double the exhibit space of its predecessor, along with a 100-seat orientation theater, an expanded gift shop, and a multipurpose room ideal for events and educational programs. Best of all, admission is still free for everyone!

🚇 Go Underground! — For the first time in 159 years, visitors can explore underground and access the fort's cannons and their carriages, which have been restored and placed on the site’s three reconstructed earth mounds. A tunnel allows visitors to walk through the fort via the central sally port, just as they would have originally. Additionally, there are bombproofs under the traverses—tunnels and bombproof shelters that had been caved in and inaccessible since the late 19th century. How incredible is that?!

🎯 Reconstructed Earthworks & Cannons — Visitors along the tour trail can view reconstructed earthworks, including the fort's 6th, 7th, and 8th traverses, a central sally port, and an ammunition magazine with a functioning tunnel system.

📖 A Richer Story — The new museum narrates the story of Fort Fisher from the perspectives of the people who lived, worked, fought, and died there. It provides in-depth coverage of the period before the Civil War and continues through to World War II, when the fort was used as a training facility.

📍 Fort Fisher State Historic Site — 1610 Fort Fisher Blvd S, Kure Beach, NC Open Tuesday–Saturday, 9 am–5 pm | FREE admission & parking!
Have you explored the new tunnels yet? Tell us about your experience in the comments! 👇 🌊
