What makes ranunculus so special?
Their many petals, light scent, Spring blooming, they have incredible vase life…. The list is long….
What are they so hard to find locally? Here in Upstate NY, they can be pretty labor intensive for the grower. And they do have some special needs, including being protected from cold weather when they are planted, but also protected from heat.

Here’s a quick timeline of how that looked for us for our trial season of them….

Early February….start soaking your corms, and put them in moist dirt in a dark and cool place to presprout.

For me, In February, I also had to work on building a greenhouse to put them in. the ranunculus corms sprouted, I spent days shoveling ice and snow out of the just built greenhouse, and then the greenhouse broke in the intense mountain winds.
Back to the drawing board, built a second greenhouse, and instead of getting them planted in early March, they didn’t get in the greenhouse here until the end of March.
Then it was feeding, weeding, watering….
And hoping they could beat the heat and bloom before it got too hot for them, despite their late start.

And this week, they sure showed us they are worth the trouble with these gorgeous long lasting beautiful cuts they give us. And for a week or two, every day, they will give us more blooms.

We’d love hearing what you think of them too….

Get them before they are gone! Sorry…no paper wrappers, it’s too windy and we had to fill buckets with water so they don’t blow away.
Ditto for the 5 gallon ugly buckets. Necessary so foxglove doesn’t tip over in the wind….
