Last night’s full moon - a blue micromoon - rising over the Jefferson Memorial. The thin clouds added great texture to the sky, and the calm winds provided nice column reflections on the Tidal Basin.

Bodie Island Lighthouse, OBX — June 2024 capture from a night with heavy green airglow, zero wind, and way too many mosquitoes. The still air made for great reflection opportunities back by the birdwatch, so it all paid off. Planning a return trip someday, but definitely earlier in the season when the temps (and bugs) are more manageable.

Sunday night’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series action at Hagerstown Speedway. Brandon Sheppard scored the $10,000 Conococheague 40 win.

First time I’ve photographed racing since shooting from the infield as a teenager. This time I tried something different—capturing the action from the top of the grandstands and shooting over the fence. Lots of obstructions, but still great to get some running shots again.

Top five: Brandon Sheppard, Brandon Overton, Hudson O’Neal, Devin Moran, and Max Blair.

Tech: Nikon Z5II + 24–120 f/4. A 70–200 would’ve been the better call.

Sunday morning’s 30% waning crescent rising behind the Washington Monument. This was the best view, since the moon was a bit more hidden behind the clouds near the top. If you look close, you can see that some heat distortion is visible on the monument.

tech details: Nikon Z8 and 500PF. Single frame.

Northern Lights over Yellowknife, Canada at the end of March. Even with a low KP index, this far north you’re directly under the auroral oval — the real challenge was three nights of total cloud forecasts and an almost full moon. Turns out we were lucky with thin breaks in the clouds. We managed to see the lights every night, watching them move one night in a way you don’t get in the Mid‑Atlantic.

The last shot is me on the Dettah Ice Road, a 6 km stretch across Great Slave Lake that’s only open in winter. In March, the ice is about 36 inches thick and clear enough to see straight down. Very cool place to visit!

One more magnolia photo from Saturday. This is from the Enid A. Haupt Garden outside the Smithsonian Castle (as seen in the background). It had rained overnight, so some raindrops were still visible on the blooms.

Yesterday morning's magnolias blooming at Indiana Plaza in Washington DC — a view I’ve admired in others’ photos for years, and finally got to capture myself.

Waxing crescent moon setting over the Washington DC Temple (the Mormon Temple) in Kensington, Maryland. I was shooting on interval and preferred the moon sequence over a single frame.

This is the same temple you see when driving west on the Capital Beltway toward Bethesda. Besides being beautiful, it’s also locally associated with the “Surrender Dorothy” phrase that’s often spray‑painted on the train bridge in view of the temple. Many people also think it looks like a Disneyland castle.

Aftermath of the Snowcrete Storm of 2026: I’m late posting these, but I finally made it down to the National Mall last Saturday to check out the snow and ice. It’s rare for DC to stay this cold for this long.

The prior Sunday brought snow plus about 3" of sleet — enough to form what people were calling “snowcrete.” I’d never heard the term before, but it fits. You couldn’t really shovel it, and with temperatures staying below freezing, everything was basically locked in place all week.

Even though I visited days later, the scene hadn’t changed much. The snow was still firm enough to walk on without breaking through, and the slick spots were still slick. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool had frozen over, which made for some unusual photos. I crossed Arlington Memorial Bridge afterward to see it from the other side.

We briefly broke above freezing during the week, but the cold and wind return this weekend. 2026 is shaping up to be a memorable winter.
