The Phantom of the North
-
Back in May, I was fortunate enough to come across a great gray owl inside of Yellowstone. I had heard from other photographers that one had been spotted multiple times in a specific location and decided to try my luck to see if I could find it. Eventually, I caught a quick glimpse of a large bird sitting on a fence post out of the corner of my eye right before it had decided to take off and move to a nearby tree. Hopping out of my car, I followed in the direction it flew and was lucky able to find it once again, blending in perfectly with the tree it had decided to perch in. A bucket list species that I had been searching for for years and I finally had the opportunity to spend a few hours photographing and watching it hunt for its next meal. And there was no place I would rather be. This was truly my favorite experience in recent memory and an encounter I will never forget.

I’ve gotten so much enjoyment watching these little guys grow up over the past month or so. These photos are from the first time I was lucky enough to see them outside their den. After going back a few times after this first encounter, I can tell you they definitely aren’t this small anymore.

Easily one of the most amazing and surreal experiences of my life. The northern lights have been pretty high on my bucket list forever now, just as it is for everyone else. For as long as I can remember, it has been a dream to not only see but to also photograph this crazy phenomenon. And to be able to experience it in my own backyard just makes it that much better. The distant shouts “OH MY GOD, THIS IS SO COOL” throughout Yellowstone will forever be engrained in my mind.
