Wow, what a week we've been through. From devastating tornadoes just an hour north of home, to severe storms delivering large hail, torrential rains, local flooding, and near hurricane force winds, Mother Nature has been absolutely relentless. My drive between home and the studio has been marked by debris from leaves that just couldn't hold on, to old trees that snapped like toothpicks.

I am very thankful that my home, my business, and the homes and businesses of my friends all seem to have come through safely. Some have damage to their cars and roofs, but nothing catastrophic. The cleanup goes on for many, and most of us can be thankful to have it behind us.

Here's hoping June smiles on us with sunnier skies and gentle summer weather.

Hi everyone! 📷 As an artist, I know how challenging it can be to come up with new and creative ideas for your work. That's why today, I want to share some tips and tricks that have helped me out of creative slumps in the past.

First, try changing your perspective. Instead of taking photos from your usual angle, try taking them from a unique point of view. Climb a tree, lay on the ground, or get up high.

Next, experiment with different lighting techniques. The right lighting can completely change the mood and feel of a photo. Try shooting in low light, backlight, or with a reflector. If you always use the same lighting setup in your studio, try using just one light. Never tried rim lighting? Give that a shot!

Third, go shopping for unusual items. I'm a portrait photographer who also loves landscape and nature, underwater, and still life photography. A stroll through a local antique mall nearly ALWAYS results in some unique object I can photograph and play with.

Finally, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Try a new editing style, a new lens, or even a new genre of photography.

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and let your creativity flow. So next time you hit a creative slump, try out one of these tips and see what happens!

Hey friends!

As a photographer, I am always inspired by the world around me and the unique perspectives it offers. Photography is my passion and I'm grateful for the ability to choose this as my career, spending time and energy creating meaningful, beautiful images.

I approach my craft with a focus on capturing personality, connection, impact, and telling a story through my images. My inspiration often comes from the people and places I encounter, but can come from anywhere - a striking shape, color combination, or an unexpected moment in a session.

Sometimes even an ordinary event like a trip to the local zoo can result in amazing opportunities to study relationships and connection. It's easy to rush through with a "saw it, next!" approach, but as my friends know, I like to linger. Whether that's on a dive trip, a hike, or a zoo visit. Yes, they also find me annoying 😘 Thankfully I'm also comfortable saying "You go ahead, I'll text you and catch up in a bit!" And, of course, if I know photography is the goal I just go it alone!

Patience pays off when you are watching animal interactions, and if I'd walked off after just a moment or two of watching these beautiful creatures, I would have missed this perfect moment.

During a trip I like to post a small selection of images from each dive day that represent whatever cool stuff I encountered. What sometimes happens though, is editing in less than ideal conditions on a small laptop screen, resulting in technical errors that go unnoticed until you see them on a bigger screen back home. So, I'm pleased to repost these favorites from my week in Dumaguete, Philippines, which were deserving of a more quality edit. As I work through the full library of cool critters, there may be more. I'll have a gallery on the Land Shark Photography website soon as well.

I am pleased to announce that I have been awarded a Silver Medal in the Professional Photographers of America's International Photographic Competition (IPC) for 2019! Silver Medal represents all 4 images scoring 80 or higher, designated as "Deserving of Merit" or better. I have one image accepted into the prestigious Loan Collection, representing the best of the best in this years competition. This is my second year entering, and I am so proud of this case of images. It's been a year of tremendous growth for me, as I've learned how to print and mount my own images for total creative control. Each of these images are physical print entries, which I have created by hand. While I am a portrait photographer, the IPC process allows me a creative venue for any genre of photography I choose. As you can see, there is a theme this year, as every image either is, or contains, a flower. I am also thrilled that my first digitally painted portrait scored 85, and was considered for acceptance into the loan collection.

"The Yin To My Yang" - Score 94 (Superior), Loan Collection
"I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up" - Score 82 (Deserving of Merit), General Collection
"Curtsey" - Score 86 (Excellent), Showcase Collection
"Wishing On A Daydream" - Score 85 (Excellent), Showcase Collection

And the last dive of my trip! I decided to quit while I was ahead, and ended on one morning dive today. We went on a quest for soft coral/candy crabs. We found two, along with some really cute fishies :)
