Unlike us owls eyes are fixed in their sockets so they use a technique called motion parallax which compensates for their inability to move their eyes. This head bobbing allows them to create a 3D view of their surroundings and accurately target hidden food. When an owl bobs its head, objects closer to it appear to move faster across its vision than distant objects, helping it gauge depth and distance. Owls have asymmetrical ears, and head-bobbing helps them "triangulate" sounds, pinpointing the exact origin of a noise, crucial for hunting in the dark. Young owlets bob their heads extensively as they develop and hone the hunting skills they'll need as adults.
