// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 33:52

This week will be all about catching up to Week 36 of the year before we hit next week at N°37!

Cody and I go way back! We went to school together in our quaint hometown of Kearney, MO almost an age ago and recently reconnected over social media - one of, if not THE only good thing about social media anymore. I also had the pleasure of meeting his partner and hearing their story.

Our goal was to capture some Olan Mills-inspired for his mother’s birthday and I absolutely love doing these types of photos when the occasion calls for them!

We took some time to catch up and then got to work producing the glorious images you see before you!!

It felt nice to catch up with an old friend and have a low-key shoot to look forward to. While I love the big productions, it’s nice to get silly from time to time and remind myself to not take everything so seriously.

Enjoy the best photos you’ve ever seen in your life!

// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 32:52

I’m back in the States and ready to get back to work!

In preparation for my recent trip to Australia, I got WAY behind. So, I’ll be playing some catch up with PROJECT : 52 over the course of the next few weeks.

Let’s get back in to it!

I visited Australia last week to see some family and couldn’t leave without photographing my wonderful grandma!

She is the sweetest person imaginable and it was so lovely to see her again!!

She had a window that let in the perfect amount of light, but the contrast from inside to outside was a bit dramatic, so I kicked up the shadows a bit with a little light I brought.

I’m really loving the fall off the 85 offers - it’s my new favorite lens for sure!

// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 31:52

I met Arslan many moons ago while working at the s**t hole that is the Guitar Center Distribution Center in KCMO.

Then, we bonded over music. Now, we bond over cosplays!

He is truly one of the nicest and most down to earth blokes I know.

I’ve run in to Arslan several times at local events over the at two to three years but I never knew who was under the Red Hood until recently!

For this one, we wanted to do something on-location but sometimes a costume says otherwise.

So I set Arslan up with my specialty: Hero Lighting.

I wanted to do something top-down to mix things up and give a unique perspective, so we shifted gears and made it happen.

His latest creation is an exceptional recreation of the white Spider-Man 2099 suit. I’ll leave the techniques and secrets to him - they’re not mine to tell - but the craftsmanship is second to NONE! I’m so thankful he trusted me to photograph it for the first time. It’s always an honor when a cosplayer trusts you with their art!

Arslan has an incredibly detailed Sesshomaru from the Inuyasha series that I had the pleasure of seeing in-person at NFM’s costume event last year that I’m hoping to work with next!

The blood, sweat, and tears he puts in to his costumes and props is truly inspiring.

I can’t wait to see what he does next!

He’s currently on an insane hike in Colorado, so be sure to wish him well when you check out his creations over on his profile.

Godspeed, warrior!

// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 30:52

I’ve seen some of Becca’s work and have looked forward to working with her for some time now.

I made a recent model call for tattooed ladies to pose as Accountants for my upcoming John Wick Universe narrative and when she expressed interest, I was thrilled! So be sure to look for the photos as they are released!

Over the weekend, I was able to work with her at the . I hosted a seasonal meet-up and the entire group managed to get some jaw-dropping images! It was wonderful to finally work with Becca. She is absolutely lovely to work with!!

Also: the Canon 85mm IS f/1.4 is fu***ng NUTS!

Becca is a creative through and through. A former HMUA, she got involved in the community 10 years ago working on collaborative events. Her favorite shoots are co-creative shoots - she enjoys working with others.

Her passion though, is helping others and our community!

She is currently working on pieces of art for a silent auction for the Volunteer KC Gala on August 23rd.

Go check out her profile and support her creative endeavors! And if you’re looking for a talented model, be sure to add her to your contact list!

// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 29:52

Kristin and I used to work together during the glory days of Best Buy.

We managed to catch up - which was long overdue - and realized that was over ten years ago…

She shared a very special story with me about some advice I gave her relating to photography and while I was very worried at first (I don’t think I have room to be giving anyone artistic advice now, let alone a decade or more ago) she told me how much of an impact that that one bit of artistic insight had on her perspective as an artist and somewhat as a person in general. It was very thoughtful and it was truly remarkable to hear that she was able to take so much away from its It made my heart happy!

She continued to work in the retail space for a time even after departing from Best Buy but is currently on to her next adventure!

Kristin is a model but also moonlights as an artist, working mostly with colorful mediums like watercolor pens, colored pencils, and acrylic paints.

She’s also an avid streamer on Twitch, so be sure to check out her streams and show her all of the support!

Getting down to business with this photoshoot, I wanted to see if I could apply the concept of using a large diffused light as a background in the color space.

Prior to this shoot, I had only done it in monochrome. (Much like the last image.)

I think the LED lights add a great texture to the background and even threw an interesting reflection off of my lens that you can see in some of the images.

I’ll definitely try this with a gel’d soft box next time.

This was a very fun experiment!

// PROJECT : 52 // reBIRTH … 28:52

Let’s take a step in to the world of the macabre and welcome Dill to this project!

I featured Dill last year during the first attempt at PROJECT : 52 last year.

We met several years ago when I was recruiting a production team to crank out a Power Rangers fan film and he had approached me at a local creative meeting wanting to put together the score for the film.

While the film didn’t make it off the ground, Dill provided some killer tracks that were definitely on-brand for the Power Rangers IP that made it in to some of the promotional material.

While I featured him in his studio workspace last time, I wanted to do more portraiture for him this time around.

He’s modeled for me a few times when I had some really eerie and dramatic lighting concepts in mind, so I knew I had to give him a call to do so once again.

I gave the slow shutter speed trick a try once again and while the results were cool, they didn’t quite hit the mark.

So instead, I did a composite of the trio Dill has dubbed “See Your Evil, Speak Your Evil, Hear Your Evil.”

I absolutely love this type of work. It was nice to stretch those eerie lighting muscles once again.

I honestly can’t wait for spooky season!

Dill is an incredible artist - both musically and his use of charcoal mediums.

All of his charcoal works are for sale as either prints or original copies, so I highly recommend checking out his profile and website if you like monochromatic art and/or artwork with dark themes and dramatic contrast.

Part two of this two-part series features Gabriella Kill!

Right off rip: special thanks to the staff at for letting us shoot inside the bar! This shoot would’ve never been possible without you!!

It was an overcast day so we made sure to mix things up and shoot some silhouettes in the doorway.

To add even more utilization of ambient light, Gabriella had a lighter she lit for a few shots. This was a very impromptu idea - at least for me - and I think it really added to the mood of the shoot.

These two had some great ideas planned and made for such a fun shoot!

It’s crazy what networking can do! I met the two of them while doing a headshot workshop not too long ago.

Just goes to show that opportunities are around every corner!

We went for a grunge aesthetic and between the location, Smoke Ninja PRO, post-pro film grain, and the wardrobe, I think we nailed it!

It’s been really challenging working with continuous and ambient light, but I’m glad that I set myself on the quest to improve in those areas.

It’s nice to be able to travel with a really small kit and pop off some great shots.

I still adore and prefer flash, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have fun with these light tubes!

Be sure to give a follow and check out all the cool things she’s up to!
