President Trump is moving aggressively to bring down soaring beef prices, including a proposal to bring 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef into the U.S. at prices below current market levels.
But several Republican senators and candidates from cattle-producing states are warning that the strategy could hurt the very ranchers Republicans rely on.
Sen. Tom Cotton argues the underlying problem is simple: America's cattle herd is too small.
Other Republicans, including Mike Rounds, Pete Ricketts, Tim Sheehy and Ashley Hinson, have also expressed concerns about flooding the market with cheaper foreign beef.
Trump says Americans need relief at the grocery store.
His Republican critics say the solution should be rebuilding America's cattle industry—not replacing American beef with imports.
