How I developed my super massive filmmaking muscles – This is MY story:
Ever since I was little I've had a love for good stories – I would checkout four or five books at a time from the library and spend the whole day reading them. I used to get in trouble in class because I'd always have a book open, underneath my desk, so I didn't have to pause the story I was in. Eventually I figured-out that
I like TELLING stories just as much as I enjoy reading them, and sometime in middle-school I developed an obsession with filmmaking. I started a YouTube channel with my brothers, wrote and directed some zero-budget action movies, and that was pretty much my entire childhood. Fast-forward a few years, and I started doing little jobs for my friends and family. Most of them were for free, but I didn't care; it was all a fun challenge for me. I remember the first time somebody paid me $50 for a video – FIFTY dollars! I took some drone photos and videos of their home so that they could list it for sale. Could I make enough to make some sort of career out of this? The idea fascinated me. I started a two-year mission in the middle of 2020, when everything was locked-down and missionaries weren't allowed to visit people in their homes. I brought my camera with me and started making videos so that we could still reach people with the current quarantine restrictions in place. Eventually that became my full-time assignment – I was the mission videographer, traveling to different areas and recording stories of faith for our page. I learned how to direct a team, set and meet production goals, and create interesting social-media campaigns for online and in-person events. Ultimately, I gained something like 5,000 hours in video production experience within a professional setting. I came home, and went to work. I designed a website, connected with videographers in the area, and started doing wedding films and corporate projects for real. I now own and operate my own film business, using my experience in cinematic storytelling to help other people share THEIR stories! I attend BYU as a full-time student during the day, and work video projects at night and on the weekends. It's chaotic for sure, but I'm having a blast.
