La Catrina has officially been donated to the Lawrence Arts Center for their annual Art Auction!

It’s a special feeling to know that the labor, patience, and love behind a piece can serve a purpose beyond itself. The Art Center has been my workplace this past year, but its role in the Lawrence community stretches back long before I arrived. Donating this piece felt like a small gesture of gratitude to a place that has given so much.

For the first time, I stepped away from behind the camera and worked with my hands instead of a lens.

Twenty hours, a lot of glue, and a few lessons later:
• Wireless rotary tools are overrated.
• Glue is way messier than it looks.
• Always give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.

Watching an idea leave my head and become something real was the best part.

Even more meaningful was the chance to explore my culture and build something where every inch holds intention.

This is just the beginning.
What should I make next?

From Targeted to Triumphant.

In 1996, Journal World published a headline: “Police want Lawrence’s help fighting gangs.” On the cover, a photo of TJ Jones being pulled over, used to support a narrative about crime in Lawrence. He wasn’t in a gang. He was a young man unfairly profiled and misrepresented.

Today, those old assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth.

These photos, taken inside TJ’s very own shop, alongside his dog ChiChi, tell a different story. One of resilience, ownership, and growth. TJ is now a successful business owner and a respected community member in Lawrence. He turned a moment meant to define him into motivation to rise above it.

Lawrence has changed, too. While there’s still work to be done, stories like TJ’s show just how far the city and the people in it have come.

This isn’t just a reflection. It’s a reminder: progress is possible, and narratives can be rewritten.
