1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.

Growing up, I used to tell my best friend and boyfriend (currently my hubby) that I felt like they were the only ones I didn’t have to wear a mask with. I could be authentically myself and feel safe and comfortable. It’s so strange how even then I knew I was masking without truly knowing what that was.

Through out my adolescent years I struggled greatly with anxiety, depression, and not feeling like I was normal like everyone. Fast forward to 27, I was finally diagnosed ADHD and that opened up a huge pathway to self love and healing. I’m not broken or odd. I wasn’t supposed to be like everyone else. ADHD and Autistic individuals can struggle greatly with masking. And masking is actually pretty harmful for your mental health. I strive to give my kids a safe space to feel comfortable unmasked. My daughter has ADHD and my sweet little man is Autistic. They both are uniquely beautiful and have this amazing ability to make a room light up.

I wanted to try and capture a self portrait that evokes an emotion. To me, this is the best way to show you all what it feels like to “mask”. I hope to do more work surrounding deep emotions and struggles. Help shed light to others that may struggle too. Be on the lookout for upcoming work.
