I’m Monica Lau, a professional photographer who is passionate about creating memorable experiences for my family, my friends and for you.
Capturing photographs has been my way of celebrating the joy of life ever since I was a Communication Arts major in my hometown of Chicago. Seeing my earliest work published in the Chicago Tribune in 1987 was thrilling and opened a new world for me. I’ve been working ever since, specializing in commissioned portraiture for private citizens and major magazines.
My work has appeared many amazing places: “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Macy's, Red Book, Parent Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Industry Standard, Honolulu Magazine, and Seattle Magazine. I’m represented globally by Getty Images.
After marrying and having a daughter, I realized again the importance of legacy portraits. It was the blooming era of point-and-shoot digital cameras, and my friends and I enjoyed making quick snapshots of our children but the images soon were stuck in storage devices that quickly became obsolete: from floppy disks to CDs to USB drives to the hard drives of outdated computers. Now, fewer computers are coming with CD drives, so what will happen to all those irreplaceable memories?
I’ve also noticed that framed photographs of our generation and our parents’ generation are missing from our homes. I grew up with images of grandparents and their parents on the walls of our home. What will we leave our children and grandchildren – tiny digital files trapped on ancient computer storage devices that they might not have the means to open?
That’s why I transitioned my boutique photography studio to capturing family Legacy Portraits. I believe that for our children, we should exist in pictures. And those pictures should be more than quick snapshots. As someone who strives to become a master-level photographer, I want to help you create heirloom-quality artwork, not just photographs. The experience should be memorable, exciting and indulgent, so I take time to work with you to create the photographs you desire.
I also believe in making a difference. My decades of volunteering, donations and charitable work include photographing children in the Make-A-Wish Hawaii program, putting on portrait events for Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii, and founding a photography program for Boys and Girls Club of Kailua. I’ve also been a photographer and donor for Women’s Fund Hawaii, Delta Society/Pet Partners, and Special Olympics - Communications team. I also have been a mentor for five years in the Youth In Focus photography program for at-risk youth.
To date, Monica Lau Photography has donated $12,000 to Make-A-Wish Hawaii through Monica Lau Photography Charitable Portrait Events and has donated $4,000 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii through Monica Lau Photography Charitable Portrait Events.
When not creating Portraits, I enjoy my Kailua life with my family. Our daughter is the light of my life and my inspiration behind the love for Children Portrait Photography. But it’s our black lab who is the real super model of the family — She poses for puppy treats!
