Pic of the Day: "Emergence"

As a lot of you know most of my images are of animals or landscapes. I have shied away from shooting people because most, as soon as they know a camera is pointing at them (guys and girls alike) tend to "pose". I feel it doesn't capture the true nature of what I'm trying to portray.

Niki on the other hand was a real pleasure to shoot. She was nervous about how she would look. We talked before we got in the water and I told her to forget I was there, just play in the waves, enjoy yourself and let the camera capture the moments.
So what emerged was this beautiful, powerful and graceful creature.

Pic of the Day: "Curtain of Death"
This is an image from yesterdays photo shoot with Niki Stepanek. We had been in the water for just a few minutes and a fairly large set wave started building. In true form I was "chimping" (looking at the back of my camera instead of watch what was going on around me) and Niki yelled "DERON!!!" I looked up just as she was in a sprint out towards the large wave that was already breaking! The tide was low and there wasn't a lot of water to dive under so I just went straight to the bottom and pointed my camera in her general direction and braced for impact!!! She punched through and had both of her fins torn off (among other things 😉). I got hammered to the bottom then flipped around a few times laughing all the while. I grew up doing this so it was no big deal. We searched for Niki's fins and thanks to Cj Kale for getting in at the right time and the right place found both fins!!!

It was a fun morning.

Oh and Niki I fixed it and they'll never know. 😉🤣

Pic of the Day: "Chin up Mate"

One of the luckiest "dip cam" shots I've gotten to date! Had this male whale shark swim up to the boat today and I just grabbed my camera and dunked it in the water for this shot! 🤣

This is the 75th whale shark I've swam with, yes we got in and swam with him too. 😉🤙🐋🦈

Pic of the Day: “Schoolgirls”

Here I am at 57 chasing schoolgirls again! 🤣

A few days ago and a nice encounter with a school of hammerhead sharks. Although the majority of the sharks in the schools we see are female there were a couple of males tagging along.

"Schools Out"

We found the hammerhead shark school yesterday and had a couple really good drops before the crowds came in.

I started documenting these schools in 2006 and have seen this behavior almost every year since. In 2017 I teamed up with James Anderson from the UH SharkLab for some awesome research projects he was/is doing. Over the years I've learned how to make approaches without disturbing the schools and they seem to accept me as one of the school. As long as I am non-threatening and swimming in the same direction as they are they have no problem swimming right up to me. In this image shot at 10mm I was rolling out of the way of the dorsal fin of the shark coming up from below me. You can see my fin tip on the left side of the image.

Note: Operators please give others space and time with these amazing animals. Please be courteous to other boats that are already on scene. Please don't drive right into the school or do really close approaches with the boats. Please don't drive and or stop directly in front of them. Please tell your guests to swim calmly and quietly. We all want the best views we can get, but these animals can be disrupted quite easily. So thank you for you cooperation and consideration. Aloha!!!
