You can feel it the moment a session starts.

The way they look at each other. The way they move together. The kind of comfort that only comes from years of choosing the same person over and over again.

These two came to Maui and spent their golden hour at Ironwoods Beach just being them. No agenda, no performance. Just two people who are still genuinely crazy about each other.

They met on OKCupid. Their first date was at the Broken Spoke, an iconic dance hall in Austin, Texas.

Four years later they have a son about to turn two, and they flew to Maui to celebrate their anniversary at Ironwoods Beach. Just the two of them.

As parents, so much of their time and energy goes to their family. This evening was just about them. The two people who started it all.

That is exactly what these sessions are for.

POV: this is how I direct couples on Maui.

Most people come into a session thinking they need to know how to pose. You don't.

I'll guide you the whole time. Sometimes that means telling you where to put your hands or which way to turn. But most of the time, it's just giving you something to do together and stepping back. Walk toward me, whisper something, make each other laugh.

The photos that end up being favorites are never the stiff ones. They're the ones where you forgot you were even being photographed.

The wave crashed right as she said yes.

I didn’t plan that. Maui just has a way of showing up at the right moment.

He had been planning this for months and chose this exact spot for a reason. When he finally got down on one knee, she didn't see it coming at all. Hand over her mouth. Completely caught off guard.

These photos were taken just minutes later.

The walk back through the water. The ring catching the last light of sunset. The smiles neither of them could stop.

Two people who just watched their future change in about ten seconds.

This is one of the reasons I love photographing proposals in Maui. The scenery is beautiful, but it's the moments you can't plan for that make the story.

And sometimes, it's a wave crashing at exactly the right time.

The proposal lasts a few seconds.

What comes after is the part that matters most.

After the nerves, after the surprise, after the "yes"...

there's a moment where everything finally feels real.

No audience.
No pressure.
Just the two of them walking the beach together, taking in the fact that they're about to spend the rest of their lives side by side.

Those are some of my favorite moments to photograph.

Not because they're perfectly posed.

But because they're real.

A few minutes in, he gave me the look and I knew it was time.

She turned toward the ocean and within seconds her whole world changed.

That reaction right there is why I love being a Maui engagement photographer. Nothing staged, nothing forced, just a real moment happening in real time.

These are the kinds of moments you can’t recreate. You just have to be ready for them.

There’s something about a slow sunset walk in Kapalua that just feels different.

No pressure. No posing. Just two people being present while the light fades and the waves roll in.

Kapalua always delivers for that. Soft light, open space, and time to just exist together for a bit.
