Hawaiian Bird Photography by Mark Kimura

Hawaiian Bird Photography by Mark Kimura Collection of bird photos in Hawaii. I'm focusing on native forest birds in Big Island of Hawaii for the time being.

Hi everyone! I'm planning to donate my high-resolution bird photos to the public domain. This means anyone can use these photos for any purpose, without giving me credit or paying anything. I'm seeking a permanent, searchable platform, beyond my personal Google Drive. Ideally, a conservation-focused nonprofit could host these photos on their website, making them freely accessible for all. Any suggestions?

Is it just me or is this albatross chick actually smiling? 😁

Here's Bristle-thighed Curlew's long bill (see my comment below to view this bird's entire body). James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge had open house this weekend (thanks to Pacific Rim Conservation) and joined their tour.

Luckily, we found this Bristle-thighed Curlew at the tour and PRC's staff member was so nice to wait for me to *very* slowly approach the bird and eventually capture this image.

Aloha! I've been into A.I. and computer vision lately, but I haven't forgotten about Hawaiian birds! So, here's my solution...I build an image recognition/object detection model to recognize and locate the Iiwi!

By the way, you are probably aware of what's happening in the Big Island of Hawaii. I live in Oahu now, but I have many close friends and some of them had to leave their houses. Please visit this website:

www.punalavaflow2018.com

and look for links under "Take Actions" - please consider helping friends in the Big Island if you can. We tend to see incredible visuals of the eruption on social media, but many people had to evacuate the area and are having a challending time.

I also have a page where I occasionally post information about the island:

Manu O Kū (White/Fairy Tern) is Honolulu's official bird. If you visit or live in Oahu, have you seen trees flagged with blue ribbon while you are driving downtown Honolulu? If you look closely, it should read, "Nesting White Terns. Do not trim". If you look up, you might see a baby Manu O Kū like this one in the photo, possibly with its parents nearby. Both parents tend to stay close to the nest, incubate egg, and feed their baby.

A friend passed her B/W photo challenge on to me.
I respectfully declined...but I made this almost-black-and-white image of the Pueo.

Thank you for posing for the camera!

It's spring, so I feel I must post a photo (or two) of the Kōlea (Pacific Golden-Plover) again! If you live in Hawaii, you may have seen ones with black chest - they are in breeding plumage and ready to fly to Alaska. I'm also posting a photo of a Kōlea who's still transitioning into breeding plumage.

My birding mentor/friend, Alex, told me about this new book that just came out last year about the bird:
