Smoke from John Ek & Whelp fires casting over a sunset filled sky.

2 days into our Boundary Waters excursion. The next day it shut down, unbeknownst to us.

We continued our small loop over the next couple of days having started Thursday afternoon at Seagull Lake, then Alpine, Red Rock, through Roy Lake, Grandpa Lake, and back to Trails End ending on Sunday at 4:00pm when we were finally notified of the closing.

We saw the smoke Friday when leaving Alpine and assumed it came from a bonfire gone wrong (bonfires have been banned, of course). Then we had a large, but somewhat fast passing thunderstorm that night. Saturday we didn't see smoke until later in the day when we moved further East to our next campsite where the waters (and wind) were calm later in the afternoon and you could feel the smoke in your eyes. We, then, assumed that was from Canada fires. It cleared that night and Sunday we traveled back to Trails End thinking everything was under control and away from us.

Grateful we were safe the entire time and had an amazing trip - it was physically and mentally exhausting in some ways (paddling 3 hours into the wind and portaging 230 rods were our biggest challenges) but really, really wonderful to do it with such amazing people that are positive, supportive, and fun.
