I found myself in Coal Hill, Arkansas for the eclipse yesterday. My original plan was to go to Lake Dardanelle in Russellville but traffic on I-40 was pretty bad and I figured it would be too crowded at Lake Dardanelle.

We found a small park in Coal Hill with only a few other people there. These are definitely not the best eclipse photos you'll see on social media this week but it was still enjoyed photographing it.

Totality during a total solar eclipse is the only time the sun's corona can be seen without a coronagraph. I don't really think photos do it justice though. Birds and other animals quiet down during totality as the sunlight dims and there's a noticeable drop in temperature during the event. It's almost a surreal experience and I don't really know how else to describe it.

Lunar eclipses and annular solar eclipses are cool but nowhere near as cool as a total solar eclipse. If you ever have an opportunity to experience totality during a total solar eclipse, you should absolutely do it.

Photographing cardinals in the snow is one of my favorite things to do in winter. I was happy to see snow when I woke up this morning so I grabbed my camera and headed outside.

The pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor) is found in North America and Central America, most commonly found in forests. Caterpillars are often black or red, and feed on compatible plants of the genus Aristolochia (pipevines).

At first glance they look similar to black swallowtail butterflies but if you compare this photo with the last one I posted you'll see the difference.

The Canyon Towhee (Melozone fusca) is native to lower-lying areas from Arizona, southern Colorado, New Mexico and western Texas south to northwestern Oaxaca, Mexico, mostly avoiding the coasts. Its natural habitat is brush and shrubland.

This might be the mesoleuca subspecies but I am not familiar with this bird and don’t see many observations on iNaturalist with this ID. This photo was taken at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas over the weekend.

Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis)

"Adults are 11.5–13 cm (4.5–5.1 in) long with a weight of 9–12 g (0.32–0.42 oz), and have a black cap and bib with white sides to the face. Their underparts are white with rusty brown on the flanks; their back is grey. They have a short dark bill, short wings and a moderately long tail. Very similar to the black-capped chickadee" -iNaturalist.org
