Preserving the most tender moments that you never want to forget. That is what a Fresh 48 Session will do. Doctors and nurses coming in your room constantly, trying to recover from the birth, feeling like you could sleep for days but can’t, and doing what you can with paperwork to get home, that’s what is often remembered during those hours after birth and before being released from the hospital. Taking photos to remember these sweet little details and moments you won’t get back with your new baby will be something you will cherish for years to come.

The family sessions that feel like you. When you are thinking about planning your family session, think about what is really a true representation of your family. Do you go on hikes, spending evenings at the park, spend time at the ball field, or in this case, go fishing? Not only will your family enjoy the session more, but you will also be able to connect with the photos more years later. You will actually be able to feel what it was like to be there, because it was genuine and true to you.

One of the most special things about photography is the relationships you can build with repeat clients and seeing how their children grow over the years. I am so thankful for the clients that enjoy working with me enough to come back time and time again. I love seeing how much this sweet girl has grown and matured since our first session together.

When looking for a photographer, make sure to find someone you can feel comfortable with. Read their websites, watch their stories, read their captions, watch their reels. You can tell a lot about what kind of experience you can get from someone based on those things. There is a photographer out there for everyone. If you are someone that thrives in a calm and relaxing environment, a high energy photographer probably isn’t for you. If you are someone that needs that hype person to make you confident, there are tons out there! With me, I will prompt and guide you where it’s needed. I will give words of encouragement, but my personality type is consistent and calm to provide a welcoming and relaxing space to allow you to feel comfortable enough to be you with a little extra support where needed.

At the beginning of this session, I told this family to act like they are being videoed in a movie the whole time instead of having photos taken. One trick to getting real emotion and interaction is treating it like you are telling a story with constant movement.

When you are in the mindset of taking a picture you think quick pose and stay there until the picture is taken. It feels awkward and stiff. When you think I am being videoed like I’m an actor in a movie, you think telling a story, movement, touch, laughter, interaction, playfulness.

The movements can be big or small. You can race each other, skip in a circle, and play tag for those big silly moments. You can also brush your fingertips against your partners arm, cuddle your baby and sway while tenderly rubbing their back, or softly fix your partners hair for the more intimate interactions.

Connection over perfection. That is where beautiful moments are created and you actually make memories while also getting beautiful photos. This mom told me the oldest son in this family is still talking about taking pictures weeks after. Make family photos fun for you and your family!

Photographing couples where you can witness their love and playfulness together is something I could do every single day. These two were down for anything and had moments of soft and gentle touches along with playful silly laughs.

Every single relationship is different, but what helps me to be the most prepared is being able to learn a little bit about you and your partner before we ever even meet. Knowing what season of your relationship you are in, how you show affection, and what you love most about each other helps me to know how to approach our session together, what little things to look for that you may not even realize you are doing, and what makes you feel most comfortable. Before every session, I will send a questionnaire to help me learn things like this about you and your partner, so I can hopefully allow you to be comfortable and just have fun during our time together.

Ever feel like by the time you actually get to the session you are so exhausted, that the magic is gone? Que the luxury of a session at home. With small children, sessions at home are the way to go. If your child is slow to warm up, asking them to show me their favorite toy, their bedroom, or their playroom is one of the fastest icebreakers you can ask for. For the parents, half the battle of packing things to keep them happy and getting to the session is already gone.

The location of your session can truly make a difference in how the photos will look, how they will make you feel, and how you will remember them years later.

If you are worried about having the perfect home, don’t be. We can tell a beautiful story in a kitchen floor, by the back door with all the handprint smudges, or in the hallway where you feed the dogs. Two of the most helpful things for in-home sessions? Natural light through a window and your willingness to interact with things in your home and each other. If we have that, we can create beautiful memories that last.
