The Shrine of Democracy
Some famous people feature as statues while some on postage stamps to mark a legacy behind them. But these US Presidents have left more than just that, by becoming the faces of the Granite rich Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Sculpted by the father-son duo of Gutzon and Lincoln Borglum, this epic project was started in 1927 and completed in 1941 in the Black hills of Mount Rushmore. Wondering why they couldn’t go beyond just the 60-foot (18 m) heads till the waists on the sculpture? Well, Budget constraints.
From left to right - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln representing USA’s birth, growth, development and preservation, respectively.
Driving to South Dakota from Minnesota was always a breeze and we’ve seen this historical monument, twice - in a bright July summer and covered by an unexpected late spring snow in May. We were able to witness Mount Rushmore in the white cover, thanks to the Winter storm Venus that dumped a record breaking snowfall from nowhere, in Spring 2015.
