"See that tiny pink bead on my lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's ! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families. If your provider suggests something (interventions, cervical checks, etc.) that isn’t medically necessary for your birth and doesn’t align with your preferences you can just say “no”.

How exactly do you tell a provider “no”? Be direct and communicate clearly. This is helpful for everyone involved.

Some ways you can do this are👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

“I appreciate the suggestion, but I prefer not to (name the intervention).”

“Thank you for your input, but I have decided to decline that option.”

“No, thank you.”

“No.”

If you are really pushed to do something you do not want to do, you may have to be firm about your stance. - “I understand my right to informed consent AND informed refusal. I am choosing to decline (insert recommendation). Please make a note of it in my chart.” This almost always results in being left alone.

While I wish I could tell you that your birth wishes will always be supported 100% by your care providers, it’s just not always the case. Be ready to advocate for yourself and talk to your partner about advocating for you. Hire a doula who can not only help you prepare for these situations ahead of time but support you in the moment if you are not being respected. “No” can be a powerful word and we should feel confident putting it to good use in our birthing space.
