As an undisclosed geyser erupts this grizzly bear climbs down from the boardwalk right towards the geyser. I could feel the mist hitting me as I photographed the bear. After the short eruption the bear climbed back up onto the boardwalk and continued on its way.

In the Smokies, photographing black bears is different. While this mother napped right here I was able to stretch out on my stomach on the forest floor and photograph her. She didn’t mind at all. Notice her upper lip hanging down with gravity. She slept light, her 4 cubs were just above spread out on branches sleeping, and she’d periodically lift her head to check on them before drifting off again.

Two yearling grizzlies playing in a heavy snowstorm.
The bear on the left tried to push the other one over but that didn’t work. The other cub pushed back, harder. Down she went and the one on the right jumped on top of her creating a ball of wrestling bears. Soon you couldn’t tell where one bear began and the other one ended.
No even full grown, the sheer power these animals have will make you hold your breath as you just watch in awe.
