Last light on Ama Dablam.

I was deep in gear, data and life organization when my room began to glow. The clouds opened for maybe a minute. I grabbed the closest camera and precariously hung out the teahouse window to catch this image. I set up a timelapse in record speed and ten frames later, Ama Dablam disappeared again.

For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of joining and the team here in the Tetons for their Climb to Glory challenge. An event honoring the legendary 10th Mountain Division and their iconic WWII ascent of Riva Ridge.

Tonight, they’re loading their packs heavy again on Teton Pass and 26 other ski areas all around the country.

Strangely, I had more stoke for skiing last July than I do now in the middle of winter. Maybe it’s the lean snowpack. Maybe it’s the ache so many of us are carrying. Maybe I’ve slipped too many times on the skin track.

Maybe leisure and sport feel ridiculous while watching people in power disregard our rights, harm and kill immigrants and their own citizens, all to lie and shirk accountability. Or maybe it’s how cyclical and constant this mistreatment feels.

Joy and outrage can exist at the same time. So can skiing and responsibility.

Photos from a summer day with Neil and Logan ski blading the grand. I’ve wanted to share these images for some time, but these feelings seem more important to share.
