Grizzly 964 Was Killed

We've been watching the conflicting mortality databases intently and were aware of the rumors about Grizzly 964 for a while. We thought it suspicious when two COY showed up at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo recently.

When Grizzly 964 was killed on June 5, she was on the north flank of the Beartooth some 25 miles (straight line) from Silver Gate where local residents were still reporting that she was in town most every night. So there was and is some confusion along with inaccurate reporting on various databases.

Anyway we confirmed today that Grizzly 964, Grizzly 399's remaining daughter from 2017 was killed and her two cubs were taken to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

It was interesting to watch Grizzly 610 and her two youngsters and Bruno share the same field for the some three weeks a little earlier this summer. They were clearly aware of each other and 610 didn't run. There are now documented instances where male tigers are interacting with their mates and cubs in a familial way - something the "experts" say doesn't happen. It kind of looks like maybe there is more to how grizzlies interact than meets the eye.

Our Circle:
We had Kimba, the white Maine C**n pictured, for 14 years. He was at least 17 years old. We rescued him in 2012 from under a deck in Colorado. He saw more of the United States than many Americans and even made it to Canada once. At his annual physical a few weeks ago he had lost 20 - 25% of his body weight over the past year and could not eat enough to maintain weight.
He died unexpectedly Sunday evening. When we found Monday morning and were waiting for some folks to arrive a local resident posted an image of a kitten with a badly injured lower jaw. She took the kitten to an emergency vet in Idaho Falls. After we brought Kimba to our local vet for cremation I called the emergency vet. No one had claimed her and her injuries precluded her from going to a shelter...

Soooo, sometimes the universe won't give you a hint and sometimes the universe just hits you upside the head with clear guidance. We drove down to Idaho Falls and picked up the kitten.

She had successful surgery today and, after about two weeks in the Cone of Despair will be ready for a long and healthy life...

We have named her Phoenix.

A quiet morning...

We ran in to Grizzly 610, Grizzly 399's 20 year old daughter, with her two cubs of the year (COY) in the pre dawn early one morning last week. Note the slightly heightened sense of alarm as she softly huffs to her kids at about 7 seconds. Nothing ended up happening though Bruno has been hanging out in the area. We hypothesize that, contrary to what the textbooks say Bruno is at least passively helping 610 by being around her and keeping other males away...you can see the video on our You Tube channel. Following is the description of the video we just posted on You Tube. Link will be in the comments...and a nice photo of Snow so you don't feel cheated....

This video is from last October in Yellowstone. We examine the relationship between the wild grizzlies who frequent the Lake Butte area and wildlife managers. This is the grizzly bear we all know and love as Snow. Gina and I have known her for her entire life...

Snow is wild. She didn't have cubs last October. The food isn't appreciably better than one hill over or another 100 yards away. She has no discernible reason for being this close to the road other than she doesn't mind people. We've seen this in many grizzlies over the past 25 years.

But wildlife managers are concerned for her safety - her mother, Raspberry, was hit and badly injured by a vehicle near here. Her brother, Rocky, was hit and killed by a car when they were COY. 399 was hit and killed by a car. L264, 1058, 610, Juan Carrito outside Castel de Sangro in Italy.

So bear managers have developed a relationship with many of these bears to help keep them safe. When they get too close to the road they get a verbal warning and, maybe, some level of hazing. Here Snow is slowly approaching the road. Yow can see her getting anxious with soft panting and sideways glances...she knows that she has chalk on her paws. The instant she crosses the line all wildlife management has to say is, "No ma'am" at about 40 seconds in and she takes off running. It is fascinating to watch these sapient, sentient creatures choose to interact with us...
