Interesting history of this bridge:
For over a century, travelers crossed the Snake River by the historic Lyons Ferry. When the Lower Monumental Dam was built downstream, the river slowed and widened into a reservoir, making ferry crossings longer and less practical.
Instead of designing a completely new bridge, Washington had a clever idea:
Reuse the entire Vantage Bridge.
The bridge was reconstructed piece by piece at Lyons Ferry and opened in 1968, finally replacing the ferry service that had operated for more than 100 years.
