Photography is art. As such, it is subjective meaning what one person finds beautiful another could find equivalent to the dog's smudge prints on the front window. For the record, the White Feather HR manager's smudge prints are beautiful works of art, but I digress...
A little known secret about me is that I really struggle putting my work on display for the public eye. The blood, sweat, and tears put into building my business from the ground up, including being completely self-taught with my photography skills, is something I am so incredibly proud of, but also something I stress about.
Operating within a comfort zone is safe. Expanding that comfort zone is scary, but the payoff is indescribable.
Yesterday afternoon, I sat through photography judging at the Waushara County fair. I love hearing the judge's opinions, reasoning, and placings for each category. I knew this photo was a strong candidate for several categories, but I eventually decided to enter it in the black/white Action one.
When the judge was explaining her placings, she asked if the photographer who took this shot was in the audience. I sheepishly raised my hand. She looked at me and said, "I have been photographing hummingbirds for years and have NEVER gotten a shot like this. This is the best hummingbird shot I have ever seen. It's incredible and you should be proud of yourself." Those words and taking first in that category was enough for me.
And then came the judging of Grand and Reserve.
I am beyond humbled to have won the 2026 Waushara County Fair Grand Champion with this photo. Those who are close to me know how special hummingbirds are to me (okay--I am *slightly* obsessed with them), and this one has really special, personal meaning. To have captured her in this stunning moment means so much.
Here you go, beautiful girl. You are officially a grand champion hummingbird. ❤📸🪽🫶
