I hope this Christmas letter finds you well. Covid-19 has taken a toll on us mentally and physically but we also have found the silver lining in the hardships. People have shown empathy and generosity towards their neighbors. Locals have given back to their communities and supported local businesses and teachers and healthcare workers have received much overdue attention and appreciation for their heroic work.
Personally I have found myself with time to reflect over the things that bring me joy and what I want my life to look like now that both my kids are grown. I started this business from nothing when they were just babies almost 20 years ago, back when film was still a thing. Thanks to hard work, countless hours in workshops and seminars, and networking with some amazing folks, it grew into Photos by Emily. It is what I call The American Dream! I never won any awards and I didn’t make a fortune, but I was successful in growing my business through only word of mouth and I felt pride and joy in making people happy, which also allowed me to live out my other dream job as a Stay-at-home mom. Though stressful at times, it was also both fulfilling and rewarding. Of course my husband Brett Shahbaz was a big part of my success as well-a fun fact-he used our business idea in one of his MBA classes which helped get it off the ground!
Having lived through a pandemic and after the death of my father earlier this year, (going back to Sweden twice!) I realized just how much I enjoy and miss traveling, spending time with family and friends, as well as my other job of working with the children at Allisonville Elementary. Every time I walk my dogs I hear a kid yell “Hi, Mrs. Shahbaz!” which really makes my day! I love quiet time at home on weekends, reading books and going for strolls without the additional pressure of keeping my skill sets and my business relevant and up to date.
As many of you know, I have been semi-retired for a while now but as I took my daughter’s senior portraits earlier this year, it feels like a natural and beautiful wrap-up of a journey that was full of learning experiences, opportunities to meet people from all walks of life, and feelings of excitement and anxiety all wrapped up into one! Many times I stepped way out of my comfort zone and even though it was uncomfortable it helped me grow. Over the years I have met so many wonderful clients, collaborated with other business owners, artists and parents and my heart is so full when I look back at it all.
Please take a minute to send me pictures of your favorite portraits I have taken hanging on your walls! I would love to look back at them! It’s been a pleasure!
With a grateful heart, I wish you all a peaceful holiday and joyous and healthy New Year! ~Emily
