🌑 Aug 2026 Lunar Eclipse

Last night I drove down to Brown County State Park, hoping to get some nice astrolandscape shots featuring the eclipse. Unfortunately, some heavy clouds rolled in right as the partial eclipse was about to begin. Weather apps weren’t showing any clouds on the radar so it was tough to guess how long they might stick around and I packed it up and drove home. Luckily, by the time I made it home, the clouds had cleared and I was able to unpack everything and start shooting again about 15 minutes before the peak of the eclipse. Watching the moon slip behind earth’s shadow and turn blood orange is something that never stops being incredibly cool.

Messier 16, known as the Eagle Nebula is a young open cluster of stars about 7,000 light-years away from Earth. This emission nebula contains several star-forming gas and dust regions including the area made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope’s iconic Pillars of Creation photo. From our point of view it may appear to be just a tiny little dot in our Milky Way, but these pillars alone are about 5 light-years tall.

Spent a very late Sunday night under the stars at Yellowwood Lake. I’ve had this marked on my map for a while as a place to check out during Milky Way season but had never made it over here until last week when I scoped it out during the daytime and knew I had to come back over the weekend. A perfect spot for admiring the wonders of the night sky.

As much as I hate waking up at 2 am for spring milky way, I don’t mind getting to hang around to watch the sunrise afterwards.
