Meet Ranger A. Campbell of JeffCo Open Space Parks. After politely scolding us for a non-leashed dog, Ranger Campbell was kind enough to offer me a bit of his time at Mount Falcon Park West Trailhead -- where YOU TOO can come get your tintype made this weekend and next!!! It was getting late in the day, so Ranger Campbell had to stand perfectly still for nearly 10 seconds to get this shot. He did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. They call it the "Sphere of Death" and it looks fun fun fun!!! As a kid this is what made physics a reality for me. Centrifugal force, inertia, all that jazz. Riding a motorcycle up a wall is science in action for a 12 year old boy!!! As an adult, forget it, I don't want to die... but I will gladly make a tintype.

Many moons ago, when SpaceX Boca Chica was just a mobile trailer and concrete pad, I showed up with my tintype rig. I had to shoot through a chainlink fence, but parked on the other side was what would prove to be a flying water tower. "Star Hopper" was proof of concept, and now Boca Chica is called StarBase and is soon to become our gateway to the stars.

This is Sarah Young Bear-Brown. She is the Vice Chair of the Native American Caucus of the Iowa Democratic Party. Sarah is a mom and an activist. Sarah was at Standing Rock and has represented her tribe in Washington DC.

I met Sarah near her home in Tama, Iowa for a couple of hours of portraits. Sarah is deaf so we used my notebook to communicate. These are 4x5 plates. In the second plate she is signing in her native tongue.

Happy Accidents are one of the magical elements of tintype photography. Special, unrepeatable turns-of-phrase erupted from my pie hole when, just after exposing this plate, I dropped it onto the floor of my sprinter van-based mobile darkroom. But after processing, low and behold, i love the scratches. They remind me of fire. Meet musician Steven James of King Slim Blues.

Meet Preston Duncan, a Vietnam War Veteran and member of the Meskwaki Indian Tribe. I had the great pleasure to meet and photograph Preston while shooting a story in Iowa. Using double exposure with an 8x10 camera on wet plate collodion tintype, everything was done in-camera.
