Sunday Spotlight! Print is available today at Art on Walnut at the City Market 8am-3pm ☺️

Union Station has been an iconic part of Kansas City for 112 years. This was the hub for everything in the city and was integral for passengers during and after World War II. The station took a serious decline after the war and eventually closed in 1985. A large renovation project took place from '96-'99 and the station was reopened and began hosting various events and museum exhibits. By 2002, the train services returned, and the station quickly became the second busiest in the state. Union Station still serves as a hub and huge attraction for people visiting and even for those native to the city.

This image was created using a long exposure. I rotated the zoom during the exposure to create a '3D' effect. This style is called Intentional Camera Movement (or ICM), in which the effect is captured in-camera by making a purposful camera adjustment as opposed to creating it digitally during post production.

Sunday Spotlight: Webster School

Find this print plus many more at the City Market today , 8 am-3 pm

Webster School is one of the oldest standing schools in Kansas City. Established in 1886 with school programs running through 1932. From that point, it housed multiple office type jobs for about 40 years. Unfortunately, the building sat vacant for many years between the 70s and 90s. A lot of deterioration happened in that time, and the building became a safety concern. Local entrepreneur and philanthropist Shirley Bush Helzberg took it upon herself to restore the historic building and then reopened it as a restaurant and antique shop from 2002-2020. The building has been utilized since 2021 as the Kansas City Symphony headquarters and remains an intricate part of the Crossroads community to this day.

My plan on this day was to shoot sunflowers during the sunset. It's a super classic plan. There were quite a few people in the first 10 rows or so, but the further back I walked, the more tranquil it became. My thoughts wandered a bit, as they normally do when I get lost in shooting, and I thought about one of my professors from college. He really drilled into his students to take the shots you planned in your head, but when you're done, turn around and see what's behind you because that could be an equally or better composition. To me, this image captures that lesson perfectly. I have many images of the face of flowers, but this is truly one of my favorites because it embodies the message to look at every angle.
