What the Wednesday: Instead of talking about architectural photography today we're taking a brief break just recognize the cool places I get to check out.

I was always the kid who LOVED field trips and watched the Mr. Rodger's episodes on how they made stuff like crayons and peanut butter on repeat. I love seeing how things work. So when I got a chance to photograph the inside of the Idaho Falls Peaking Plant, I felt like an excited little kid again. The plant uses clean burning natural gas as an alternate way to generate power for our community and diversify from hydroelectric, which is their predominant specialty.

What the Wednesday Architecture Edition

Today our lesson is: "don't cut corners"

Now this applies to many things in life, but in photos of buildings, we are being literal. Try to cut off as few of the corners as you can in your crop, especially for exterior photos. You won't always get every single one, but the more, the . . . merrier? Just don't cut corners! And when you have to, make sure the leading line doesn't terminate in the corner of the photo, drawing the attention out of the frame.

Our next What the Wednesday post about architecture and interior photography.

Last week we talked about lighting, but hand in hand is this week's topic-focus and purpose.

Sometimes I am just given an address of our a building and am free to photograph what I want. Sometimes I get a very specific list of what the architect wants to see. For me, it is not enough to just take a picture of the room because the architect wants it (the purpose), I also want that picture to tell a story, or have a focus.

For example, an exterior picture needs to show the building, but how can I also use that picture to tell you that while this space is clean and functional, it's also beautiful?

I want use my photo to "tell" you that the waiting room is friendly and comfortable, without sacrificing the beauty and little details that make the space feel modern but still welcoming.

A surgical room needs to "talk" about the design that enables it to be roomy, comfortable, and clean ( I got to wear cute little booties and bonnet for this part!).

Even a shot of the wash station needs to convey the pre-thought and design choices that went into it.

At the end of the day, as the viewer you might not know the exact purpose or story I'm trying to tell, but I bet you FEEL some of the things I am hoping you'll feel.
