This beautiful girl, Penny, is quite the survivor! Penny was surrendered to a high-kill shelter with her mom, dad, and sibling. Sadly, her dad and sibling didn’t make it out due to becoming very ill. When Penny was pulled from the shelter we didn’t know how gravely sick she was too. She had contracted what her family had gotten, the parvovirus. But thanks to the amazing and fast acting volunteers at Friends of Rescue, she received immediate round-the-clock care and beat the parvovirus. (FOR is still about $2k short for Penny’s medical care. Donations are still being accepted through their website if you’d like to help.) Penny was a very timid girl who had only lived in a garage her whole life. Now that she’s in foster care and has started to blossom, she’s learning to trust her human friends and how fun it is to play in a backyard and go on walks. She really enjoys sitting with you and watching tv too. She has become quite the Velcro dog to the person she trusts most.
Friends of Rescue has written a great bio (read below) for Penny and if you think she might be a good fit for you, please fill out an application through their website.
🦮 Penny is a 7-month-old Goldendoodle with the softest curls and an even softer heart. While she’s still just a puppy, Penny has already been through more than any dog should. Her difficult past has left her fearful and unsure at times, so she’s looking for a patient, understanding home that will help her continue learning that the world can be safe and kind.
Penny absolutely LOVES other dogs and truly thrives with canine companionship, so she would do best in a home with another friendly, confident dog to help show her the ropes. She bonds quickly with women, but she is still very wary around men. Any male figure in the home will need to be patient, gentle, and willing to give her plenty of time and space to build trust at her own pace.
Because Penny can become overstimulated during play and zoomies, and may occasionally be a little nippy when nervous or excited, she would do best in a home with older children (10+) or no children. She’s still very much a puppy and is currently in her chewing phase, so lots of toys, enrichment, and bones are a must to keep her busy and happy.
Penny is learning basic training and is a bit of a stubborn girl, so patience and consistency will go a long way with her. Her absolute favorite game is fetch, and once she feels comfortable, her playful personality really shines through. She also LOVES her crate and sees it as her safe space where she can relax and decompress.
She walks well on leash but can still get spooked when passing strangers, so she’ll need continued confidence-building and positive experiences as she grows.
Penny is being fostered in Huntsville, AL and is only available to local adopters at this time through Friends of Rescue
If you have the patience, compassion, and loving home this special girl deserves, Penny just might become your most loyal best friend.
