Wandering around in Kyoto. I wanted to bring a film camera on the trip but of course there are sometimes too many options. But I didn’t want to carry around any more gear. I found this Pentax 110 camera at an estate sale and I have to say it’s now one of my favorite cameras. There is something really satisfying shooting with this tiny camera. From focus, clicking the shutter, and the best part advancing the film. The quality is perfectly sh*tty without being too sh*tty. Even when it’s bad it’s still really good.

As soon as we walked in, we were presented with a shrine. But this was not the typical statue-and-burning-incense shrine. Warm, glowy light poured over a table filled with vintage cameras. All the major players are represented, from rangefinder Leicas to a medium-format Mamiya. All were sitting on what was probably a hand-crocheted tablecloth made by the owner.

I like to call Grandma-San. She wore white platform sneakers with rhinestones stretched around the top, a black velvety jacket, pearls, and a gold-leaf brooch pinned just right. Her red hair, about 2 months past fresh, almost matched the trim paint in the cafe. A black apron was worn to protect her from a hard day’s work. She felt familiar. Her caring smile and the sparkle in her eyes made you feel at home.
