This weekend, I’m heading out to one of my favorite places in the world to photograph a very special wedding. There is something so magical about Nantucket — it’s like the air is fresher. More elevated. And the sunsets? Dreamy.

Same wedding. Posed vs. candid.

Sometimes these photos are only a split second apart.

I might give you a little direction. Put you in good light. Ask you to move closer. Give you somewhere to put your hands.

And then I watch. Because very often, the photo I’m waiting for happens right after the photo we set up — when you stop thinking about me, look at each other, crack up, exhale, or do something entirely your own.

After 20 years of weddings, I know that the difference between a portrait and a moment can be less than a second.

So yes, I’ll pose you when it helps.

But I’m always watching for what happens next.

Pristine is lovely. But so is evidence that people actually lived in the room.

I don’t think the wedding industry gets to decide what a bridal portrait is.

It might be something straightforward and lovely, like the last image in this series. Or it might be something less obvious—a moment Emma wasn’t even aware was happening. A bit of movement. A particular light. A feeling I noticed and knew I needed to photograph.

A portrait doesn’t have to be posed, polished, or perfectly composed. Sometimes it’s simply a moment that feels like her.

Emma trusted me enough to let me see those moments—and to do pretty much whatever I wanted with them. That kind of trust gives me the freedom to make photographs that feel like more than a pretty picture.

Because a portrait isn’t defined by a pose.

It’s defined by what I see.

These are some of the moments that make me giddy behind the camera. The moments that don’t belong to every wedding, but that appear from time to time and make me so happy.

I think staying curious is part of what makes someone a great photographer. It’s what keeps every wedding feeling fresh, every gallery feeling personal, and every celebration worth paying attention to.

And after all these years... I’m still finding new things to love.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding photography is that your photographer creates the moments.

We don’t.

We create space for them. We notice them. We preserve them.

But the energy in your gallery starts with the energy you bring to your wedding day.

If you want a packed dance floor, be the first ones out there. If you want quiet, intimate photos, steal a few slow moments together. If you want your gallery to feel joyful, don’t hold back your joy because you’re worried about how it looks.

You never have to perform for my camera. In fact, I’d rather you forgot it was there.

What I do want is for you to be fully present in your own day.

Because that’s where the photographs everyone falls in love with come from.
