Above the wetlands of the Great Swamp, NY, dozens of eastern phoebes take to the skies for a feeding frenzy at sunset. Nabbing insects off the surface of the water, sticks, and even out of the air, their acrobatic maneuvers amazed me. Some of the pursuits would be over in seconds, and others weren’t so easy.

Tracking their erratic movements in flight is challenging, but in a moment where everything aligned, one flew directly toward me. Face to face with its reflection, the phoebe snatched a bug off the surface of the water and ate its catch mid-air.
