Here's a fun one I made at the rodeo recently. I like it even though it's a little grainy, which doesn't really bother me too much. Sometimes a little "texture" is a good thing! It's grainy because 1.) the HP5 negative was pushed two stops in development, and 2.) it's a bit of a crop. It may seem odd to push two stops for an outdoor shot, but that's a long story and the decision made a lot of sense under the circumstances. As for the crop, the negative suffered from a light leak in the camera that I had to work around to salvage the image. This light leak had been a recurring irritant in this particular Leica. I had sent it off to reputable Leica repair services to search out the problem, but it was obviously not resolved. I've since taken the camera to .camera for a look and, after shooting a test roll, I think they have resolved this mysterious issue. Thanks, Riley! It's wonderful to have such a good local resource for camera repair. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

I am extremely honored that "The Air Itself is Filled with Monsters" has been selected to be exhibited in the 2024 Members' Juried Exhibition at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California from April 20 to June 2, 2024. Only 45 images were selected for exhibition by juror Catherine Couturier out of more than 2,600 submissions from around the world. This photo was taken on a stormy night after the Pride Parade in Houston, Texas. I was walking back to my car and saw the dramatic lightning flashes in the clouds to the north. I set my 5cm Summar lens to wide open at f2 and my shutter was probably at 1/30th of a second. But I had only three frames of film left in the camera and my timing with the flashes of lightning had to be spot on. Out of the three frames I exposed, one of them worked out and here is the result! #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

The Pixels + Silver group exhibition will be opening next week at Christ Church Cathedral Gallery in Downtown Houston. This is a Participating Spaces exhibition in conjunction with Fotofest 2024. "Perchance to Dream" is my contribution to the show, presenting another viewpoint on the theme of "home." There are 27 artists participating in the exhibition. If you are in the Houston area I hope to see you at the opening reception on March 7th. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

Some more from the ALONE series featuring benches this time. Benches are multi-purposed and are great places to watch the world go by or simply take a rest. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

How about a little minimalism today? Made these at the Menil Museum Drawing Institute with a 1940 Rolleicord. I was surprised when the negs turned out overly dense. Then, shortly after I shot these images the shutter on the camera gave up the ghost, which may account for the overexposure if it was dragging before it stopped completely. Still pretty interesting images nevertheless. I took the camera to .camera who revived the mechanism, cleaned the optics, and installed a fresnel screen to brighten the viewfinder. The post-repair images are greatly improved! #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

ALONE in nature. It is rather mind-boggling to realize just how small we are, each of us, on this planet and in this universe. Yet, despite our minuscule stature in nature, individually we loom large in one another's lives to be compassionate or indifferent or cruel. As a collective unit, we can band together to create a nurturing environment or we can spoil our world in division or in war or for profit. Earth will continue to exist either with us or without us. Let's strive to make good choices to uplift each and every one of us and to be good stewards of our only home. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

ALONE with a book. I don't know what your experience has been, but I know that I started reading much more during the pandemic than ever before. And the habit has stuck with me and I now read daily. My stacks of books read and yet-to-be read are growing steadily. Reading is such a joy. Reading is a way to escape. Reading is a way to grow. The right to read needs to be protected and book bans should not be tolerated. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

Another series theme that I have been working on concerns the many ways of being alone - alone by choice, alone by necessity, alone with oneself, or a dog, or a book - there are endless versions of being alone. For some, being alone is a pleasure and for others it is a circumstance not chosen. To me the first example posted here depicts the serenity of spending time with oneself in reflection (also literally in this case). #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

Back to stairs today, but a little closer to home this time -- near Buffalo Bayou and Sabine Street west of downtown Houston. One stairway closer to the street appears to be regularly traveled and the other further down by the bayou less so with autumn leaves gathered on each of the steps. I'm enjoying finding stairways of all types of construction to photograph. Looking through my archives I'm finding that I have been shooting stairways sporadically for years and I still have some more new negatives yet to print. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

Two more studies of stairs - the steep steps up to Montmartre in Paris with their railings and lamp posts in contrast with the simple rough steps leading down into the garden of the Musée de Montmartre. #ʙʟᴀᴄᴋᴀɴᴅᴡʜɪᴛᴇᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ
