Good pose vs. next-level pose. Can you spot the difference?
 
All four of these images were taken with the same model, the same light and the same camera settings. The poses on the left are fine. The poses on the right are where a portrait goes from nice to professional.
 
 
STOOL POSES…
 
❌On the left, her straightened arms hide her shirt and create a wide X shape through the middle of the image. The pose turns her silhouette into a broad triangle instead of a slim, hourglass shape.
 
 
✅ On the right, her shirt is visible, her arms are bent and look natural on her knee and her waistline can be seen. Her shoulders are angled and the whole pose feels relaxed and confident.
 
 
TABLE POSES…

❌ On the left, her body is square to the camera and her arms make a wide square frame across the table, covering her hourglass shape. The result is flat and broad.
 
✅ On the right, her shoulders tilt and she leans in towards the camera. Her arms angle in instead of spreading out, so the frame narrows and her face becomes the focus. It’s a small shift, and the image has more asymmetry and confidence.
 
 
Why this matters:
Women have an hourglass shape. Cover the waist, and the camera turns that curve into a box that looks wider than you are. Open the waist, angle the shoulders, and your natural shape does the work.
 
You shouldn’t have to know any of this in front of the camera. That’s my job. Professional images take a photographer who can pose and guide people of every shape and size, so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands.

Your headshot makes your first impression before you walk into the room. It shows up on LinkedIn, on your website, in your speaker bio, and on the proposal a decision maker is reading tonight. So the real question is whether it tells the right story about who you are now.
